Until yesterday my Windows XP Sp2 computer was helpfully creating thumbnails for my .avi files that I was capturing - very useful.
For some reason they no longer appear. Now, when I select thumbnail view I just get thumbnail sized icons instead with no helpful pictures.
I haven't changed any settings.
Can anyone help please?
Is there another utility out there for creating simple thumbnails of .avi files?
TIA.

In an Explorer Window that lists some .AVIs, try clicking on the "Edit" dropdown menu - and select "Thumbnails"...

Wouldn't that be View > Thumbnails? :)
Only certain file types can generate a thumbnail image - I've never seen one on an .avi unless it was an uncompressed one.

Well they certainly existed on my computer and they were DivX compressed.

I did say in my original post "when I select thumbnail view".

install haali splitter, tick support avi files during installation and enable thumbnails in settings of haali splitter (not sure if this is default).

Just checked on my other Windows XP computer and there are thumbnails for .avi and .mpg files.

Have you tried performing a "System Restore" back to the last date that things were working properly?

Start > Run > regsvr32 shmedia.dll

Start > Run > regsvr32 shmedia.dll
It registers some CLSIDs needed. :D

Weird things are happening.
I've checked uncompressed .avi files and they DO have thumbnails.
But, (it's true!) I did have thumbnails for my files that were as follows:
Captured from analogue thru WinFast VC100 PCI digitiser card
Video Compression: DivX Home Theatre profile, progressive scan, 120MB chunks
Audio: PCM
The thumbnails were there until I started using YAAI to adjust the audio sync and then they stopped appearing. Now all the thumbnails for those files, even ones I haven't tweaked have disappeared. Newly captured ones don't have thumbnails either.
The only thing I can think is that WindowsXP momentarily (British usage) forgot that it wasn't supposed to create thumbs for compressed files and then YAAI reminded it!

this little app might help. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_thumbnail.exe the other way is to re-register the file type. Sometimes letting Windows take over the file association (so it starts opening with the Windows Media player) will fix it. I generally just swap codecs and eventually it starts working again.
