Trouble capturing with VirtualVCR

i'm trying to capture some VHS tapes with my ATI all-in-wonder 9700 series video card, using the analog capture guide posted in this forum.

basically virtual vcr comes up fine and the preview window shows my video stream. the problem is configuring the video capture pin properties on the 'devices' tab of virtual vcr settings. the settings are:
video standard: NTSC_M
frame rate: 29.97
color space: UYVY
output size: 320x240
when i press the 'ok' button, it tells me "error connecting: that format is not currently available". i've tried changing the color space to YUY2 and the output size to various other choices, but i always get the same "format not available" error message.

can someone offer me suggestions on what to try?

Hi!

If you can't resolve the problem with VirtualVCR, as an alternative, try using the built-in capture program in VirtualDub (Make certain to use a deinterlacing filter, either during or after the capture)...

Have you tried turning off the preview, changing the resolution / colorspace and then turning on the preview again?

Yes that's for sure. Not the easiest to get going but will do the. Try other ATI
updates.

ok, i switched over to virtual dub and things work a lot better over here. virtual vcr seems to lock up my machine occasionally, but no problems with virtual dub.

i have all the latest ATI drivers installed.

a couple of things are confusing me on virtual dub though. i noticed that when i capture at 29.97 fps that the actual capture occurs at approximately 34.5 fps (hovers between 34.1 and 34.9). why is it so far off? i mean i don't expect it to be exact, but 34.5 is not even close to 29.97. it's so far off that if i tell it to "sync audio to video by resampling audio", then it sounds like the chipmunks talking.

the other thing is that i don't seem to have any options for compressing video. the only option in vide->compression is "uncompressed UYVY". the capture guide sticky-posted to this forum shows several compressing codecs in this dialog screen, like huffyuv, etc. are there codec packs somewhere that i can install?

i guess these are probably newbie questions, so thanks very much for any help.

Codec "packs" can be hazardous to your health! Install only those codecs that you actually NEED! I'd suggest you install a "lossless" video codec, such as HuffyUV and a DivX codec.

How are you setting you capture framerate?

I suggest you not to install codec packs, unless you're ready for a fantastic trip inside your system registry..
Imo Huffyuv, Lagarith and Arithyuv lossless codecs work well. For the re-encoding process, it's your choice :)
For the fps issue, check the bottom right options inside VDub main window.
