When I was mostly Windows I used EAC to backup my CDs because it gave me a for sure 1:1 copy. Since there is no EAC for Linux :( I have taken to using Grip. I use the built in cdparanoia. Does this offer the same exactitude of EAC?

Nope, it doesn't erase the cache of your drive, i.e. defective sectors of Audio-CDs are not really read twice.
Someone on hydrogenaudio.org is developing a script that actually reads Audio-CDs several times and compares the results, but I cannot find the thread now.

So it should be allright with very clean CDs, but not with scratched up CDs? I'll just switch to EAC when I need to rip a scratched one.

Hi
I was navigating through the hydrogenaudio forum when I saw this thread:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=38418
The author of the program mentions that the intention behind creating it was to not have to emulate EAC anymore so perhaps that could be an answer for you :)
