suddenly ripping is a slow process

A few days ago I ripped Ong Bak and right now I'm ripping Two For the Money. I'm using a fairly old SmartRipper cause it has always served me well except for Arccos protected discs. But suddenly on these last two movies the ripping process is taking much longer than usual. I used to rip a 7+ GB disc in 15-20 minutes but now it seems to be taking almost an hour for a disc the same size.

Has anyone ever experienced a sudden and unexplained reduction in ripping speed? Is it possible that it has something to do with the movies themselves?

The first thing to check is your DMA settings on both of your IDE Controllers. This is the number one cause of a dramatic sudden speed "slowdown."

Cause: if you experience six "cyclic redundancy errors" (often due to a scratched DVD, but can also be caused by newer copy protections), Windows will quietly re-set your IDE controllers from DMA mode to PIO mode. Do a search on "DMA mode" and you should find the best ways to diagnose, and also to fix the problem.

I've now tried switching back to DMA mode from Device Manager but it didn't work. After choosing "DMA if available" and clicking OK, I opened it back up and it still said "PIO only."

I've also tried uninstalling the drive, rebooting, and letting windows P&P reinstall it for me. Same problem ... still can't switch from PIO to DMA.

Any ideas?
