I asked for some help here:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=107345

I was accused of violating rules.

<i>Rule 6: No warez, cracks, serials or illegally obtained copyrighted content!</i>

I did not illegally obtain content. I downloaded it from Google.

<i>rule 15: Political discussion not directly related to DVD backup issues are prohibited...</i>

What? I did not discuss politics. I was not doing a backup of a DVD. I was doing a "save" of downloaded content. The owner of the content ENCOURAGED distribution.

Can someone explain this to me? In one syllable words, preferably.

Reading this thread would be a good start: http://forum.doom9.org/announcement.php?f=6

1. Due to situations that might arise in regard to the mentioning of downloaded files, whether legally or illegally obtained, and the negative attention that this might bring to the forum and the board in general, here is a set of do's and dont's for our members that have any queries or are facing problems regarding downloaded files.

2. No help will be provided in regards to downloaded files. We won't walk the extra mile to clarify the legality of your files. We believe that this is unproductive and the members shouldn't put Doom9?s Forum in this position. Yes, we know that there are plenty of perfectly legal downloadable movies available.....and there are also plenty of illegal, copyrighted ones. To keep us from having to decide which is which, we request that you not mention downloaded movies. Never. Also, don't mention any bootleg DVDs that you got from E-Bay or an Asian DVD/VCD Retailer, or anywhere else.

There's a chance that one of these days someone will try to build a case against Doom9 for a crime related to promotion of "piracy." Whomever might do this will comb through these forums looking for any example of the toleration of piracy being knowingly aided. Apparently, the host would even prefer to avoid the discussion of legally downloaded videos because of appearance, or even the possibility that a legal download might turn out to be illegal (although, I think this is excessive if the download appears to be legal).

It is most helpful to identify the video and where it may be legally obtained. But, as that seems not to be allowed, you should keep your questions related to your own backup activity (how circumspect is that?), or just keep your questions generic. "How do I accurately remove the duped frames in NTSC 29.97 progressive?"

"Yes, we know that there are plenty of perfectly legal downloadable movies available.....and there are also plenty of illegal, copyrighted ones. To keep us from having to decide which is which, we request that you not mention downloaded movies. Never. "

So, this is an addendum to the "rules?"

So downloaded files from Google is a difficult decision?

On those threads that were looking for a downloadable clip in order to test various codecs, they where in violation of the rules, but the moderators decided to turn a blind eye?

So the "perfectly legal downloadable movies available" announcement on another thread is OK if it relates to codec compression, but not otherwise.

Just to prevent someone else from falling into this Orwellian trap, perhaps the rules could be further expanded in their explanation?

I'm still wondering about Rule 15.

No, it's a clarification of the rules.

I'm still wondering about Rule 15.

Probably has to do with the fact that your content is political in nature.

Violation of rule #15 is IMHO farfetched to say the least.
From what I've read in the original post, there is 0,0000% political discussion about it.

I know zit about the movie and I definately see no reason to deny help, based on content.
That has only one name in my book, and that is censorship.

About Rule #6, there is no question this is a violation. BTW is this recent?

People, please end this discussion. You know very well there is disagreement in the mod team about the interpretation of rule 6. We all agree it means that talk about downloaded stuff is not allowed unless it is clear it is legally obtained content. In case the content is legally obtained, there is a bit disagreement about what should be done and different mods will act differently. If you are talking about downloaded stuff and it is not clear whether it is legal or illegal, you won't get a strike for that, but just a warning. You need to live with this, just as we need to :) If you want to see this changed, you can bug doom9 about it in the 'Forum / Site Suggestions & Help' forum.

As a last remark. If you don't agree with decisions by the mod team, you know where to complain.
