View Full Version : Stuttering Issue with DVD Rebuilder confirmed!

I have just completed backing up Neon Genesis Evangelion Platinum 7.

It stuttered on the second half of the first episode - it is the scene where Eva Unit 2 and Unit 1 are fighting hand to hand while Kaworu Nagisa (the last angel / 17th angel) watches the fight explaining the true meaning of the AT Field.

The DVD:

Neon Genesis Evangelion 7 Platinum Edition. Interlaced. PAL 4 (Australia)

The settings that I have are as follows:

DVD Rebuilder 1.07.2 Pro
One-Click Mode enabled
Steal Space from Extras 0%
CCE Basic VBR Bias 25/ Qual Prec 16
Undot().Deen() enabled
No Menu Encoding
Full Backup
Shutdown on completion

The stuttering description:

The video would pause a little bit then recover and it would do so repeatedly for approximately 30 secs (or the duration of the fight - and it was a cool fight too). I also checked the DVDFile folder (original folder that has been created on the computer by DVD Rebuilder - THIS WOULD AUTOMATICALLY DISAPPROVE ANY NOTION THAT THE MEDIA IS AT FAULT! I PLAYED THE FILES CREATED DIRECTLY FROM THE OUTPUT FOLDER OF DVD REBUILDER) I found that it stuttered on the exact same place and it is as bad.

I have all the files DVDFILE (output) and D2VAVS (processing folder) (I knew this would happen so I preserved them as they are). I would appreciate any diagnostics you have in mind.

For the mean time, I wouldn't touch DVD Rebuilder with a 10 foot pole when I backup DVD. Being shocked twice with disappointment is really bad to the nerves, considering nobody in here backs up Anime DVD series as much as I do.

Any reply would be appreciated. Let me know if you need anything else.

Here is the copy of the rebuilder file:

And before anybody ask -

I checked the source Neon Genesis Evangelion 7 Platinum Edition. There are no stuttering. Source is a brand new Neon Genesis Evangelion 7 Platinum DVD (what can I say? I'm an avid Evangelion fan and I don't want my friends to ruin my original DVD's!) hence the need for backup.

Good luck.

Wow...you sound like you're really disappointed.

I see you've checked all the normal things. Have you tried a backup with other software (like DVD Shrink) without ill effect? Also, I doubt this to be at fault, but make sure your system is running healthy -- every so often things start to get a little flakey in my box and then I look at motherboard monitor logs and see my CPU was running hot and then I check the box and see that things are getting a little dusty.

Just a few suggestions...

@nivremous

Thousands of users of DVD-RB -- and you alone are experiencing this. Have you considered that there may be something else wrong? Maybe the original? I've seen that happen -- a good example is the PAL version of "K-19". Maybe some type of new anti-copying mechanism is being employed on this particular disc? It's also very possible there is something else wrong with your computer... you've said it happens a lot to you -- but no one else is experiencing it.

In the meantime I'd suggest you keep the inflammatory comments like the "10 foot pole" one to yourself, it isn't a very good way to get help. The people who post in this forum are experienced in the use of DVD-RB and know better than to pay attention to that kind of nonsense.

If you would find the chapter that is causing the problem, extract it with VOBEDIT, and send it to me maybe I could run some tests on it. I'd also appreciate it if you PM or send me your registered e-mail address.

You said that DVD RB has thousands of users but how many of these users are actually backing up Anime DVD's? Not the Anime movies like Spirited Away, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, etc but real Anime episodic DVDs.

This is the reason why I want to setup a separate thread to aid Anime DVD owners. Because of my vast Anime collection, I always get requests from friends to borrow my DVDs so I intended on backing up instead and sending those. I researched high and low on all forums and nothing... I mean there are no information regarding proper backup and issues with Anime DVDs.

I dare any of the thousands of DVD RB user to show yourselves and claim that you have backed up a whole six Anime DVDs of - let's say... Ghost In The Shell, Stand Alone Complex or.... Samurai Champloo 1 - 7 series... or Cowboy Bebop 1 - 6 (damn! this is a good series! I loved it!)... or even maybe... Neon Genesis Evangelion 1 - 6 or the Platinum version 1 - 7. And if you claim that you backed them up... then HELP US! Tell us your settings... what filter did you use to get good quality, do you see any spots or grains (this is quite common in Anime DVDs... if you backed up Neon Genesis Evangelion, do you still see those grains on Misato's hair? If you backed up Full Metal Alchemist series, on 3rd DVD, do you see grains on the thief (the black cat... very sexy thief).

Anyway, I knew that my computer is going to be checked too so I am prepared... my computer is a Pentium IV HT 3.0 GHz with 1 GB memory, 120 GB Hard drive. I currently just completed backing up my Full Metal Alchemist DVD 1 - 5 (a friend wants to borrow it and I'll be damned if I lent him my originals especially my mint box!)

I meant when I said I won't touch DVD Rebuilder with 10 foot pole when backing up DVD. Minutes after the DVD Rebuilder "STUTTERED" results, I quickly backed up Full Metal Alchemist DVD 1 - 3 (a friend needs to watch this. Girls love their Animes) using DVD Shrink no issues. No stuttering.

My current test for the mean time is as follows:

Neon Genesis Evangelion 7 Platinum

DVD Rebuilder Pro 1.07.2
CCE SP 2.7 25/16, 4 Passes
No Menu Encoding
Undot() enabled (I can't take this off because of the grains in Anime DVDs)
One click
Shutdown at completion

@jdobbs
I appreciate your reply. I want to point out that aside from real movies being backed up there are a lot of Anime fanatics out there just like me wanting to try backing up their precious originals (I love my Anime originals). I actually promoted DVD Rebuilder to my fellow Anime fanatics only to be smashed in the face with the stuttered DVD results. So you can understand my disappointment.

I really have high hopes. I still do. And I am still hoping.

Anyway, I'll let you know of my progress. I'll follow your instructions and send you the stuttering section.

Cheers!

I meant when I said I won't touch DVD Rebuilder with 10 foot pole when backing up DVD. Then why are you posting here? I have serious doubts as to your motives... as your continuing rant on this same subject confirms.

If you have a registered version of DVD-RB (I have doubts, but it doesn't matter) -- send me your address and I'll refund your donation. Then you can go away and recommend DVD Shrink to all your friends. As I've always said, it's very good software. It's just aimed at a different audience that is concerned more about speed than quality.

Posting long diatribes like the one you just posted doesn't make you any more right... you've definitely "worn out your welcome" with me.

You said that DVD RB has thousands of users but how many of these users are actually backing up Anime DVD's? Not the Anime movies like Spirited Away, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, etc but real Anime episodic DVDs.

Me for example. Ich have 100+ anime DVDs here, most of them episodic DVDs. Its RC2 PAL, RC2 NTSC and RC1 NTSC stuff. And I did not experience any problems making backups with DVD-RB yet. Believe me there is no diference between episodic anime or episodic tv series dvds.

So calm down, ask nicely and maybe your problems will be solved.

@yogi_

You had 100 Anime! Wow! Did you watch all of them as a test? What filter did you use? Are you getting those grainy images? Those grainy images can't be helped, they are common with the Anime originals. But did you get rid of them though? How? What encoder are you using? CCE? I tried using CCE Basic 25/16 but now I'm testing CCE SP 25/16/4 pass. How about yours?

It would help Anime DVD collectors backing up that if you successfully tested the 100 Animes if you could share your settings and your recommendations. Because the thing is... there are no information available for us Anime fanatics to follow. So it would be good if you could share. I am willing to share... the good and the bad.

And because of that I'm apparently being kicked out.

@jdobbs

Did I ranted? Sorry. I always get carried away. I didn't mean to insult or whatever you are thinking but despite that... I have posted as much information as I can and I am still testing. All of my posts show my experience with DVD RB and I'm happy with it albeit I got some issues but I'm working on it.

Atleast I got a response from a user who backed up an Anime. Hopefully he'll share something. Because... I am sharing. By the way I changed my post name to Anime Fanatic... how's that? Cool huh!

Cheers!

@yogi_

just a question... sorry about this but...

Have you backed up Samurai Champloo and Neon Genesis Evangelion? They are stuttering but Full Metal Alchemist DVDs are OK. By the way... are you using Full Backup and with 0% Steal Space? What do you think of my settings? Do you think it's a good idea to use Deen(), jdobbs says its not good so I only use Undot() now.

What do you think? It would be good to share for future Anime DVD users!

Cheers!

??? I've made no such comments about deen()...

Why are you still asking? Have you found an 11 foot pole? I still haven't heard from you concerning the registered address...

Looks like jdobbs seriously wants to kick me out.

Anyway... just stay away with Neon Genesis Evangelion and Samurai Champloo series with DVD RB... it stutters and my solution is... (I actually found one)...

Nah... I'll let somebody else bother jdobbs. Or better yet. Let them see that their back ups stuttered too late (like in front of their friends and such).

Developer's ego are way too sensitive and way too bloated, getting hurt by silly little comment. I apologized and still no good. Geez.

Goodluck. You can close this thread now.

17th February 2006, 18:10
Done.

So I guess the fact that you can't come up with a registration address confirms my suspicion. So let's see if I have this right... someone breaks into my house and steals my dinner. When he gets it back home he decides to change the seasoning to suit his tastes. You decide to have dinner with him. You then have the unmitigated gall to call me up and bitch because it has too much salt?
