View Full Version : Bitrate in BitrateViewer not correct??

Hi,
I encoded a DVD, DVD-RB tells:
- Reduction Level for DVD-5: 66,1%
- Overall Bitrate : 3.685Kbs
- Space for Video : 3.964.002KB
- HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 4.943/600/3.685 Kbs
The DVD consists only of the Menu and the Movie (147 Min)
When I check the vob's from the Movie with BitrateViewer, it tells me lower average Bitrates (almost all Bitrates are lower than 3000)!!??
Which Programm is right about the bitrate??

The values you see in DVD-RB are what are used in the encoding and they are correct. What file are you testing with Bitrate viewer? If you are an NTSC user and are testing the output M2V files, bitrate viewer will be off by 25% because the frame rate is adjusted upon rebuild.
HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 4.943/600/3.685 Kbs
Also, if you look at this line you will see that some segments have an average bitrate as high as 4,943 and others have bitrates as low as 600. They bitrate is dynamically allocated based upon an analysis of the original stream. They TYPICAL bitrate will be 3,685.
Why didn't you name the thread "Bitrate Viewer not correct?" Why would you assume DVD-RB was off?

Does that matter, how i named the thread?? I thougt this is the DVD-RB Forum and because of that I write DVD-RB instead of BitrateViewer :)
I analysed all Files of the Movie (PAL Movie, 25 fps) VTS_15_1.vob to VTS_15_5.vob
Bitrate Viewer told me this:
3024, 2854, 2957, 2863, 2920.
Is there any Explanation, why BitrateViewer could possibly analyse the Bitrate wrong??
Is there a Programm which is capable of analyse the Bitrate correct, so that i can compare the Bitrate with the one DVD-RB gave me??
PS: Don't be mad, because of the titel ;)

What did you use to encode it? If you look in the ECL file you'll see a parameter for each segment. The value vbr_brate_avg identifies what is being sent to the encoder. If the disc is correctly sized, it also means that was what was actually created.
Interesting, because I've seen Bitrate Viewer be wrong many times, but it's normally wrong on the high side.

I used CCE 2.67, 7 passes (1 pass for the vaf File and 6 passes for video)

Have you tried DGIndex?
It's the most accurate tool that I can remember of

How can I analyze Bitrate with DGIndex??

Just run it, of course you need one of the newer versions 1.4.6b3+, afterwards you can see the average bitrate in status window.

Ok, but i have not found out, where to get the beta version!!?? I only got 1.4.6 from neurons HP!!??
OK, i got it, but nothing is been shown about the bitrate:

That's the right version. Don't you know that plus means version 1.4.6b3 or above? ;)

As jdobbs said.. if the bitrates listed were wrong then your dvd would be too large or too small.. with that said.. i ran a test with dgindex (loaded just the movie vob files all at once and then hit F5 and set playback to maximum) when it was done i got 2.651 average
dvd rb reports
- HIGH/LOW/TYPICAL Bitrates: 8.552/363/2.644 Kbs
pretty close.. and i had menu reduction on but i didnt run include the _0.vob with the others in dgindex. dunno if that makes a difference.
to find dgindex just goto the dvd2avi/dgindex forum here and find the dgmpgdec 1.4.6 Final thread and its the first link in the first post
