View Full Version : Only 1 pass on CCE

Hi
Iam using Cinema Craft via DVD2SVCD to convert Divx to SVCD. THe problem appears in the passes. in DVD2SVCD i set it to do 6 passes and CCE only does 1. why would this be happening?.

A couple of thoughts which may or may not help...
1) Did you set it for CBR instead of VBR? CCE won't do more than 1 pass ever for CBR output.
2) Maybe it's a problem with 6 passes. 6 passes is way overkill. Have you tried 5 to see if that works? Unless you are using some huge swings in bitrate like minimums of 400 Kpbs and highs of 2400 for SVCD, you really don't gain anything in doing more than 3 passes for VBR. It just takes a lot longer, but almost no one thinks it improves quality.

Wel its set to VBR & i also tried 3 passes but it still ends up doing 1 pass.
Iam trying to convert Dvdrip Divx files to SVCD.

Not being funny here but are you sure?
With most MPEG encoders, the progress bar gets right to the end for each pass and then restarts from the beginning.
With CCE this doesn't happen. You just get the one progress bar however many passes you do.
If you are sure it is not doing more than one pass, please post your DVD2SVCD logfile.

Yeah, OK, that is only doing one pass!
In the bitrate tab, what have you got Max Average set at?
The only reason I can see for this is that if the calculated average bitrate for your conversion is higher than your entered Max Average, it will encode CBR at the max average bitrate.

OK. There are 3 settings to go at down at the bottom of the bitrate tab (ignore Min avg. which is probably greyed out anyway - if it isn't greyed out, untick the box next to it)
The total of Max in the bitrate tab and Audio Bitrate in the audio tab must not exceed 2756, so set Max to 2756 less the audio bitrate.
Set min to 300 and max avg to 300 below whatever Max is now set to.
Then try again.

Not quite what I'm trying to say.
You have set Max to 2756. What I said was set it to 2756 less the audio bitrate
So, go into your audio tab and check what bitrate you're using for the audio, then subtract it from 2756 to get the right value for the Max box. Then subtract a further 300 and use that for Max Avg.
From your log, it appears you are using 256 as your audio bitrate. So, in the bitrate tab:
Max=(2756-256)=2500
Max avg=(2500-300)=2200
This will stop you getting the error pop-up. However, I was guessing you must have messed with the settings in the bitrate tab to bring about this single pass encoding. From the default screenshot you posted, it appears not.

I have a suggestion. Read the guides on using CCE and run it by hand and just see if it will do 3 pass VBR for you run it outside of DVD2SVCD.
I did have a thought on what MIGHT be causing your problem. CCE uses a lot of CPU. It frequently uses 98-99% of the CPU on systems. Sometimes multiple passes fail because the system runs out of resources. There are ways to fix this problem. Try this and maybe if you are lucky, it will fix your problem and you won't have to see if you can run 3 pass VBR manually in CCE like I suggested. That would only tell us if the problem was with CCE or DVD2SVCD anyway. Here's what you do.
1) Do NOT under any circumstances use your PC for anything else during the encode. Do not surf the web, do not read documents. Leave it alone to work on your encoding job.
2) Start the Windows Task Manager (you can usually find this by doing CTRL-ALT-DEL and picking Task Manager from the popup window) BEFORE you start the DVD2SVCD encoding process. Start the encoding process. Click on "Image Name" under the Windows Task Manager to put them in alphabetical order. Look for an image called "ccesp" or something like that, which is the CCE process. Right click on it with your mouse. Go to Set Priority and set the priority to Realtime. Running the CCE encoder in Realtime mode gives it the highest priority access on the PC to system resources and it usually is enough to prevent CCE from crapping out. If this fixes your problem, you will have to do this everytime you run DVD2SVCD or CCE in multipass mode. I have a 3000+ AMD chip with 512 MB of memory and if I don't run CCE in Realtime, it will fail in multipass mode almost every time for me.

I would have posted this earlier, but I had to wait 5 days before I could post.
I had exactly the same problem. It doesn't appear to run at the Max Average, for me it did an encode at 6000kbps when the max average was 7200. It is *definately* doing one pass, as it displays it as 'Pass 1/1', and in the CCE main window it says 'CBR 6000kbps'. That would indicate that there is some communication problem between DVD2SVCD and CCE, and not an error in CCE during the encoding process.
I have found two solutions to this:
1) Use CCE 2.5.
2) Click 'cancel' as soon as it starts encoding, then edit the job to the settings you want (ie VBR, and the bitrates) and click 'encode' to start it again.
The second method caused the mpeg to be out of sync - although this may have been for a different reason, as I am by no means an expert at this!

doing exatly what you said but as you can see this screenshot of CCE 2.5, we cant see how many passes its doing.
Nick
5th March 2006, 11:54
True, but you can work out how many passes it's doing.
We know from the time stats in your screenshot that the conversion will take roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes (=165 mins). We know from the speed counter that it is converting at 3.62 times real-time speed.
If you know the length in minutes of the original AVI, you can work out the number of passes.
(Total converion time) x (speed) = Passes
(AVI running time)
nirbhayn
5th March 2006, 20:14
In that case
its 165/99*3.62 = 6.
When CCE was told to 3
Nick
6th March 2006, 00:24
Hmm. Maybe the reading in your screenshot was a bit of a spike, rather than a fair reflection of average conversion speed.
At any rate, it certainly didn't only do the one pass.
Komp
6th March 2006, 11:54
If you know the length in minutes of the original AVI, you can work out the number of passes.
Or you can just look at the main window of CCE, look at the relevant job and see whether it's being processed as CBR or VBR.

Hello people,
I have read the articels above and have the same problems,
I am trying to convert avi's to dvd.
I have used serveral dvd2svcd and serveral CCE but still i have the same problem.
I seems noboby has ansers for me.
When i want to convert a avi 4 passes it just encodes it 1 pass OPV Q60. And this is not what i want.
Can anybody tell me why dvd2svcd en CCE do this?

Wishmaster20 - That's great that you read the previous posts. Please re-read my last post in this thread and try my suggestion. It may or may not fix your problem, but it requires very little effort on your part to try it and if it does fix your problem, so much the better. I see nothing in your post that suggests that you have even tried my suggestion.

Thanks for your reaction, but i did try your advice and it didn't work.
I have a amd 64 bit 3000+ with 1 Gb intern, and when i make my one avs file en load this in CCE it encodes fine but my audio is out of sync. So thats why i want to use dvd2svcd because you have more settings possible.
So does anybody know why it Enocdes OPV Q60 instead of psses?

Can you cut and paste your DVD2SVCD logfile into a reply, please?

Did you try canceling the encode in CCE when it starts, changing the settings in CCE itself to 4-pass VBR and then starting the encode again?
Wishmaster20
15th March 2006, 22:01
Yes i tryed that, and CCE wants to encode the avi 4 passes.
I can see in the window of CCE that it is encoding 4 passes but all passes last 1 or 2 min. so 4 passes will take about 8 minutes. This is not right.
The funny thing is that when i create a avs file and load this in CCE then it will encodes correctly but the audio is out of sync. So something goes wrong, but what???

@Wishmaster20
Suggestion : Edit your D2S logs B4 posting them.
Saves any possible infringment of Rule #6 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm).

Suggestion : Edit your D2S logs B4 posting them
I notice this advice has been taken, as the logfiles have been edited subsequently to ArchieX's post.
This does not "get around" rule 6. I think it is safe to assume that if ArchieX had to prompt you to edit your filenames, then your contribution to this thread has violated the rules.
Since the starter of this thread has not contributed for some time, I am closing this thread.
