video h264?

i have some avi's and im trying to convert them with TMPGEnc, but they wont open. i checked gspot and it said not installed so i clicked on more info and it said (pic 2)

ive never heard of this video codec. what codec do i need to get these files to open with TMPGEnc?

did i mess up installing the codec? i try what you said START -> Programs -> ffdshow but ffdshow was not in programs. what do i do? im so confused :scared:

Are you sure your CPU supports SSE-2 ?????
Maybe this build is not suitable for your PC.

So try official daily build from: http://ffdshow.sf.net/
Not very up-to-date, but more compatible/stable I think...

h264 is the new upcoming format =)
Also named : MPEG4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) which yields much better quality than XviD/DivX and other "commonly used" formats.

Yet it needs much more time to encode and a very fast CPU to decode (>1.5ghz is highly recommended).

Only late builds of ffdshow are capable of decoding h264 (later than mid-2005). Since it didn't seem to work for you, you may try this :

CoreAVC is the only other alternative to ffdshow (and nero6's directshow filters if you have it installed, which I doubt since gspot didn't find them), but it's in VERY EARLY BETA stage and this is the last build that will be available for free (go and check the CoreAVC thread if you want more details).

Just saw that in the first screenshot that you posted you already had ffdshow installed (and that it worked perfect, look at the bottom of the screen you posted, the DirectShow render was ok),
the trick that tommy carrot gave you should have worked, definately, and even still, I'm not sure that TMPGEnc uses VFW for decoding. Try a more recent build just in case :)

ok i installed ffdshow-20060202-icc-sse2 and i only installed this VYou must install FFDSHOW VFW Codec. Tommy Carrot give you good answer. When you start installation you can choose what you install. I think is list some like this

Decoder
Decumentation
VFW
etc..

deathmule, Tommy said use the shortcut once it's installed to get to vfw, not during the installer (which only sets directshow decoding).

CoreAVC does not include a vfw decoder that tmpgenc can use. Consider using avisynth however.

This is not the same as the thing you done. In the instalation, only the directshow decoder is configured. You need the VFW decoder.

You can use VirtualDubMod frameserver with TMPGEnc and see if TMPGEnc crashes again...

Open it with VDM, File => Start Frameserver => Start (choose a filename). Then, start a new project with TMPGEnc, open the .vdr file when the source file is asked by the project wizard(select "all files (*.*)" in File type to see it).

If TMPGEnc say the file isn't recognized, start "auxsetup.exe" in VDM's directory and click on "install handler". ;)

That doesnt mean it's unstable, it mean't that TMPGenc has determined your CPU doesn't support that set of instructions....

how do i find out if my PC is unstable? does that mean anything if its not checked in TMPGEnc? ill never understand codecs decoders and so on :mad:

He also asked weather your PC supported SSE_2 (which by that screen shot looks to be a no). This is probably the reason ffdshow isn't working for you. Uninstall your current ffsdhow, then goto http://mirror01.x264.nl/x264/ffdshow-20051221-gcc4.0.2-sse-x264.nl.exe and install that.
