DVD to Avid Express DV

I have a number of DVDs containing 'rushes' originally shot on Hi-8.

I want to be able to edit these on Avid Express DV, but it does not import DVD or MPEG2.

What's the easiest way for me to import this footage into Avid?

Does Avid Express DV accept DV wrapped in avi? If so you can frameserve the mpeg on the DVDs via DGDecode/DGIndex / Avisynth to VirtualDub and encode to DV avis (assuming you have a VfW DV codec like Panasonic DV / Cedocida etc.) installed.

Yes it does.

In fact, it will import DivX .avis, but it has to render the files before you can edit them.

I was hoping to avoid too much fiddling about and find a 'one-stop-shop' program to do the job.

Communist - could you explain what is meant by 'frameserve'?

Copy the DVD to your hard drive, then open the VOBs in DGIndex and save a project file (also demux = split the audio from the VOB files). You can then use Avisynth / VirtualDub to convert the MPEG2 files to DV avis.

You can use a simple script (text file with .avs ending) like this one:
MPEG2Source("Drive:\Path\yourd2vfile.d2v")

Load this in VirtualDub and select DV (you will need to install a VfW DV codec) as compression and save to avi.

Though I dont know how good it is at encoding to DV (never tried that).

A one click solution might be the free "MPEG Streamclip". Apart from many other things it can convert MPEG to Quicktime or Avi-DV which can be easily imported into Avid. Great tool if you don't want to fiddle with several progs and things IMHO...
