Sorry my first post has to be a newbie type question, but I have been trying to get this stuff working for a while to no avail.. so I'm putting it out to you guys.

My Problem is playback of 720 and 1080 h264 files (mvk), I'm unable to get a smooth FPS rate. I'm running a P4 3 GHz chip (Northwood so no sse3) on Windows media centre (center...grrrr). Files seem to skip and pause for long times.

I have tried many diff players, ffdshow (within mce), mpc and vlc but all seem to offer around the same performance.

So my question. Should I be able to play these files back smoothly on my system? and if so what do you think I'm doing wrong.

I have a great many ts files I would like to trancode to h264, but i'm reluctant to even try if I cant get smooth playback.

Get CoreAVC.

Yes, like Sirber said, get CoreAVC, that will play 720 very well. As for 1080. I have some doubts ...maybe with some overcloking...

1080p plays flawlessly on my:
CPU: 1-AMD XP, 1530MHz, 256KB
Memory: 1024MB

Extract to: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ (the file = CoreAVCDecoder.ax)
Start/Run/CMD > regsvr32 CoreAVCDecoder.ax
Done.

Well, I'll keep my suspicions untill I encode a 1080p sample tonight. I supposed that since 1080p has more than double the pixels compared to 720, and since 720p plays with around 50% (with coreavc) on my 3200+...
Maybe you could upload a small piece of your 1080p movie to see how much it uses on my cpu? I had some contradictions with some people on another forum that said they can play fine 720p only from 2.4 ghz (pentium) and up (which seemed a bit high to me).
