Always the same problems: underquantization, undersizing, pulsing...
This "new" libavcodec engine is still based on the unfinished Peter Cheat NuEnc. It could be improved through the VMesquita source code shared now as GPL.

It is strange..
Thank you for the info.

But, I tried the VBR mode (it functions).
It is really fantastic, and very optimized: anything to see with others encoders( Quenc, Nuenc, HCEnc or AutoQ2 ).
What is impresses to me is the final size: Lower than its adversaries, with a very very good quality.

You should test it Freelock.. Yes..;)

AutoQ2 is only a q-prediction tool and NOT an encoder (uses CCE)!

I tried FreeEnc a while ago but I had troubles with it. HCEnc is on the right way. If I want a fast good DVD encode I use CCE and my tool AutoQ2 to do it. Also I wrote a prediction tool for HCEnc but I didn't found time to test the new 0.17. I hope the new GPL release of FreeEnc will optimize the unfinished code of NuEnc.

It is true that I didn't try everything, but I can reassure you that VBR mode functions well.
I would benefit on occasion to test the other functions...

I have a big admiration for your work. especially for AutoQ2 "that I find successful better "than HCenc tool that you achieved, probably because AutoQ2 uses CCE.

For my part, I use CCE 2.7O pro. But my stroke of heart comes back to FreeEnc for its optimizations.

I've tried FreeEnc. It gives great quality & fast speed with the small output size.

However, I always encounter Closed GOP problems during author with DVDLab. Anyway to counter this?

Mpeg-1, is surely a mistake..

Well, I used the FreeEnc GUI to convert. So no exotic command-line options or anything like that.

When I open my output file in GSpot, it identifies as MPG1Payload. When I open it in DGIndex, it tells me "DGIndex doesn't support MPEG1 at the moment".

Maybe it's a header problem? That the file's actually an MPEG2, but the header says MPEG1?

For Quenc ( .m2v )
DGIndex informs me:

main@main / 25000000 fps / Pal / Progressive / ITU-R BT.709

Whereas with FreeEnc 0.5 ( .mpv )
DGIndex says:

(MPEG1 / 25000000 fps / Pal / Progressive / ITU-R BT.470-2

Strange.
Can someone else confirm my statements?

Turns out I had an old version of DGIndex, the newest does support MPEG-1. Gives me the same info as you got.

I wonder if it is a true MPEG1 (note that DGIndex shows it between parenthesis: [MPEG1] or, who knows maybe a MPEG1 improved.

If it is the case it is a very good work (4/3,625).
