What's the relationship between H263 and MPEG4 ASP?

Sorry for my noobish question, but I've never found any clear answer to that question. Is the same as H264 and AVC, i.e. "the same thing"? Or ASP (XviD, DivX) is a sort of "substandard" H263? And what is H263+?

it's different. I think ASP only use the quantizer matrice of h263.

afaik h.263 is more like asp's small brother, eg asp is able to use both the h.263 quantisation and the mpeg quantisation method (afaik h.263 doesnt use a "matrix" comparable to mpeg's)
h.263 and asp are not compatible

If you are looking for a free h.263 codec, just use libavcodec to encode to h.263, e.g. with mencoder or ffdshow.

So If I understand it correctly, h.263 is not MPEG-4. Or is it? I didn't find it as part of ISO MPEG-4 standard at Wikipedia.

H.262 = mpeg2
H.263 <> mpeg4 part 2 SP
H.264 = mpeg4 part 10 aka AVC
