I've been trying to convert some video files to WMV to see if/how well my Xbox360 will play them, but the only thing the encoder program does is crash. I get a dialog box saying "windows media encoder has encountered a problem..." and then it restarts. It doesn't really seem to matter what codec was used in the avi file originally, as every one I've tried ends with it crashing. Anyone else having this same problem?

You can try uninstalling or updating your ffdshow, if you have it installed.
I read somewhere that some versions of ffdshow caused what you described.

Thanks for the info. I thought that might be it, but didn't want to get rid of ffdshow alltogether. Now I just need to find all the different codecs I'm going to need.

What format are the audio/video streams in your avi file?
I could never make the WME encode hidef with anything but Elecard codecs.

WME sucks. Use WMNicEnc, much better.

You realize they both use the same SDK, right?

And WME uses Directshow. And I have yet to see WME take an input file that has multichannel ac3 audio and output multichannel wma.

And why is that a problem?

Your codecs are probably getting in the way of each other. What type of video are you trying to encode? I've been farting around for a bit with WME9 to encode TS files. Turns out I had to fight tooth and nail to get XP to have some of them with top priority over other ones.

That's the link of somebody's walkthru for getting TS files to do their thing in WME9. That parts you might want to read up is using graphedit to see what filters your machine is using and then maybe using something like Zoomplayer to alter their order in hopes to use the right ones
