View Full Version : Problem with MPEG2 TV Captures - Please Help

Hi,

I regularly capture Films and TV shows into MPEG 2 using my Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 250.

I then either convert the files to Xvid using AutoGK or Burn to DVD using Ulead DVD Moviefactory 4, depending on what I will use them for.

However, I occasionally get captures which when converted into either of these methods become problematic. This is frustrating, as it causes problems in about 1 in every 15 things I record.

For instance, I recently recorded a movie into MPEG2. It plays fine in Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic and also VLC.

However, I have tried converting it to Xvid using Auto GK. The file will open in the media player windows, but it just doesn't play back. You can skip to any point in the movie using the slider bar, and that seems to work as the frame will change to that point, but will still not play. I then as an alternative tried to creave a DVD-Video of it. When this was done, it played back the image, but there was no audio whatsoever (apart from a few wierd blips of random noise at the very start).

It's obvious that there's something about the source file which is causing this problem, but it's very odd that the source file will play back fine.

Does anyone know of any software which I could use to 'clean' this file of any errors or does anyone have any suggestions?

You can try demux using ProjectX.

I have demuxed using Project X. I now have 2 separate files containing the Audio and Video. With AutoGK you cannot choose a sepatae file to encode as the soundtrack. What would you suggest I do now? Should I multiplex now, or encode now and multiplex later? What tool should I use for the Multiplexing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried an application called HDTV to MPEG2.

It can re-mux MPEG-2/AC3/MPA within .TS to MPEG-2/AC3/MPA within .MPG.... making them more suitable for encoding with AutoGK :)

EDIT: If you need a tool to mux std-def MPEG-2 elementary video streams together with AC3 and/or MPA audio streams, into a full DVD VOB (etc) file structure, try MuxMan.

Didn't bother using HDTV to MPEG2. I'm from the UK, and we're quite backwards here as HDTV isn't available here yet (although Sky promise it at some point during 2006; maybe even in time for the football World Cup this summer). So didn't bother using that application as I wasn't sure whether it'd work.

I did however try MuxMan... Thank You! Now converted to an Xvid using AutoGK! Works Brilliant! You're a star! :-)

So didn't bother using that application as I wasn't sure whether it'd work.Well you can put your worries to one side as I'm from the UK too.... and happily HDTV to MPEG2 does work on our std-def .TS stream captures ;)

Unfortunately, we wont be able to use HDTV to MPEG2 on any Sky-HD content, because it's been encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and not MPEG-2 :(

THE solution was.

Make good mpeg stream with "pvastrumento"

Then do all cut/join opération with "cutermaran"

Youve got it.

A simple solution, by a simple french guy.:cool:

Sky-HD will be using MPEG-4 AVC and not MPEG-2! Excellent! That means even better quality HDTV! I've never understood why US content providers use and MPEG-2...

... I've never understood why US content providers use and MPEG-2...Because just about every other Continent had HDTV years before Europe... and MPEG-2 was the only digital choice at the time ;)

EDIT: The quality wil only be as good as the source and transmision bit-rate
