Before posting, I went to the guides section. I looked around for a bit and found that most of them have not been updated in a while. I haven't had to backup any DVD's latley but will have to soon. I was wondering if anything new is out. I used to use DeCrypter/Shrink and just backup the main movie (no menus or spec features). Are these still the most popular apps or is there something new I should check out?

Hi!

Many of the newer DVD releases contain additional (new) forms of copy protection. If you're seeking freeware-only solutions, check out these links:

(There are perhaps easier to use commercial solutions, such as "AnyDVD" and "DVD95Copy")...

Great! If I was going to buy a commercial solution that would take care of everything I need, what would you reccomend?

IS that a popular one as well?Yes... Good support?Excellent!

(Did you think it would be my personal favorite if it was unpopular and not well-supported? ;>} )

personally, if i were to spend money on a commercial application, i would definitely consider the Pro version of DVD Rebuilder (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=75). Not only is it developed by one of the moderators of this forum (jdobbs), and receives excellent support and frequent updates, unlike other programs, it can use CCE (or for freeware alternatives, HC and Qenc) to re-encode the video (as apposed to within-the-domain transcoders) which most people would agree, will give you a much better final result (although the trade off can be in time taken to re-encode the video)

there is also a freeware version avaliable so you can try the program out before you hand over any hard-earned money for the pro version.

I had been using CloneDVD2 which is easy to use, but after trying DVD Shrink I like it almost as much. It's not quite as easy to use, especially if you go to reauthor, but it works well and it's free (CloneDVD is not, and doesn't allow for any reauthoring).

Unfortunately, DVD Shrink, by itself, is not capable of processing either "ARccOS"-protected or "RipGuard"-protected DVDs...
