View Full Version : Problem with menu encoding and The Island

Hi!
I ran into a problem while trying to backup The Island.
If I select menu encoding the main menu will work but the scene selection menu will not work anymore. It consists of stills and after the run of DVD-RB it is just a still without a possibility to select anything.
If I backup the DVD without menu encoding, everything is ok.
It's the RC2 version of The Island (didn't use any other programs to edit the DVD) and DVD-RB 1.07.1 .
I saved all the inf, ini and log files so if you need them I can mail them.

Ok. Could you send them to me? (dvd-rb@dvd-rb.com)

@rumbah
On the attempt that had the trouble, which was true:
1. the menu responded to the remote, but the highlights weren't displayed
2. the highlights were displayed but nothing happened when selected
3. there were no highlights, and nothing happened with the remote
Also, did it act the same way with both a software player and a standalone player?

Ok, I sent the mail.
The answer to your questions:
3. there were no highlights, and nothing happened with the remote
I only tested it on software players. I'll try it with a DVD RW on a hardware player later this evening.

I tested it on my hardware player and it is the same. No highlights and nothing happens with the remote.

I tested it again with 1.07.2 and it does not change anything. The scene selection menu is not working.
I'll try to search another dvd where some menu parts are stills and see if the error occures there, too.

I've done a lot of DVDs with stills in the menu in testing.... I can't imagine what this might be... I'll keep looking at it.

@Rumbah - try a MenuShrink on the DVD Rebuilder (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/) processed menu. There's a neat log showing errors (if any - in particular, the absence or misplacement of subpic packs). If the menu shrinks OK, you can see if that fixes the problem.
Another idea is to do a mock strip of the menu. There may be some corrupted pointers. I know this is just a temporary fix.

@Rumbah
I just did a test of the NTSC version. It has the same problem with scene selection. The other menus appear to work correctly, but in scene selection -- even though I get the subpictures, it doesn't seem to change the display. I think it's responding, though, because I get audio changes... Odd. There definitely seems to be something unique in the way the scene selection works on that DVD... I'll research it and get it updated. In the meantime, if you're in a hurry, I'd suggest you do that one without menu encoding.
I certainly seem to have underestimated the complexity involved in menu encoding...
I'll keep you updated.
Thanks.

Ok, running MenuShrink after DVDRB really fixes the menu (of course everything consits of stills now). I got the following log:

Running pcgedit (before DVDRB) it it says that VTSM 1,3,5,6 are empty and that there is one subpic stream difined for the Menu domain in the VMGM_MAT table of the VMGM. This subpic stram is not really used by the PGCs.

I certainly seem to have underestimated the complexity involved in menu encoding...
A'int that the truth - i was amazed at the variety of different issues that arose when i was creating numenu - and there are still new ones being thrown at us (to make backing up as painful as possible). If i can be of any help just met me know.
have you thought about LU removal (which in PAL land we suffer from big time - i have disc here with 5 language versions - what a waste of space that is)

@Rumbah
What program did you used to rip the original?
I'm asking you this 'cause I had a problem "slideshowing" menus on "Blade Trinity" usinf DVD Fab Decrypter... tried again using DVD Decrypter and it went just fine... (I didn't "slideshowed" main menu though... just the chapters menus.... I din't "slideshow" the menu transitions either)...
Don't know if this info can be usefull... just my two cents :)

I used DVD Decrypter to rip it.

Found it. It was nothing more than the setting of the sequence_extension header's progressive_sequence flag. It's amazing sometimes what the on/off state of one bit can do...

I think Zeul is right on about menu complexity -- good thing there's lots of us production beta-testers... ;)
I always nuke the extraneous LUs with VobBlanker (reuse function)...

PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html) can also kill the LUs. It pisses me off when they don't put different languages in different LUs. Just makes for more work.
