Suddenly I have no sound -on avis, wmv, mpg, mp3 and vobs except when I use PowerDVD or if I open a webpage with a midi file. This problem applies to VLC, WMC, Virtual Dub Mod, Foobar2000 and both Mediaplayer 6 and 9. This is a work machine running Windows ME.
The only thing I can think of that would cause this is that I opened a webpage with WMC. It was a wmv file and it would not play until WMC downloaded a codec, but I wonder if that could really affect all those file types. I downloaded and reinstalled Windows Media 9 but no joy. I tried to use system restore but when it finished I got a message saying it was unsuccessfull.

Hi!

It sounds like you've either inadvertently turned off, corrupted, or deleted the standard Windows audio codecs...

Does that mean a Windows reinstall or can someone tell me the names of the most important ones and how to use that register command. What was it rgsvrl32 or something similar?

Double-click the Volume control icon in the system tray and make sure the "Wave" slider is up. PowerDVD will override the Wave setting and suddenly you'll have sound with it open. This very problem has been discussed here before.

Thanks, you were right. I had to uncheck a mute button there and move both the wave and master slider. I'm surprised the mute and volume keys on the keyboard don't control that.
