View Full Version : little question about x264 and RAMusage

When encoding some rather cpu&time consuming avisynth scripts I normally first encode these scripts with a lossless codec and then later convert these lossless encodes with x264, so far so good. Process works fine and while encoding I watched the RAM usage with taskgmr under windows and saw that x264.exe uses just something like 85MB (got 2GB RAM so at least 1GB more wouldn't hurt me), so seeing that the following question popped up in my mind:

Is there a way to boost the RAMusage of x264 such that it will support/speedup encoding? (or is this just a silly thought?)

so thx for any constructive comments :)

My x264 RAM usage is a bit over 200mb, regardless of what I encode and what settings I use. Yours seem on a low side :) Or my is on a high side... whichever.

I think the only ram it needs to use is to hold a few frames for back- and forward-references, plus the last few encoded frames. (Up to chosen # of reference frames iirc.) Otherwise most of the work goes into tiny chunks of single frames, so there isn't much need for gallons of memory outside the framebuffer.

200MB =20 for x264 and 180 for avisynth.
And no, spending more memory won't make it any faster.

Ok, thx for the answer. :)
