View Full Version : Problems with DVDRB 1.07 & CCE Basic

I have always used HC Encoder with DVDRB due to the fact I've never purchased CCE.

I decided I wanted to try CCE last week and purchased the basic version 2.70.01.09. I also received my new update of DVDRB 1.07. I installed it using the installer and made sure to check CCE as the default and CCE Basic Retail as the version.

I tried backing up my DVD of Big Head Todd and the Monsters Live at Fillmore. It is region 1 with ILVU. I also used the one click mode on Rebuilder and there was no pre-processing of the video.

Everything went fine up until the encode process. DVDRB extracted some stills and then created an m2v and asv for VTS_01 and then froze. Task manager showed CPU usage up at 100% and the application cce2.exe running, but CCE was nowhere to be found on the desktop. I do have minimize encoder checked in setup, but CCE was not even in the taskbar.

I uninstalled everything, CCE and DVDRB, and reinstalled - but the same thing.

Can anyone give me some insight as to what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks, Ty

I use CCE Basic for the majority of my encodes... no problem here.

Well, I'm very happy for you. I was kind of hoping you might have some insight as to why I am having problems or some advice as to what I might be able to try to get it to work.

@fairhope, you realize jdobbs is the author of the software right?

did you install using the full installer?

Fairhope
8th February 2006, 19:19
Yes, I do realize jdobbs is the author of the software. And a I do believe his software is worth a hell of a lot more than he asks for it. I also know that he is one of the few programmers/developers that goes out of his way to offer a free version as well.

And I do realize I probably shouldn't have posted the earlier comment. I was just looking for some help and trying to provide as much information as I could to assist anyone who might have had the same problem and know a fix.

I apologize, jdobbs. I watch this particular forum quite often and am always amazed at how you actually listen to everybody's concerns and help them out or advise that a fix is in the works for the next version. When I saw you had responded to my thread I was just expecting some news which might assist me. Sorry.

jptheripper: Yes, I installed the software using the full installer. I've never attempted to install each piece separately.

if the m2v is being created, the cce basic is being launched

check the task manager and see if cce is running

Task manager showed CPU usage up at 100% and the application cce2.exe running, but CCE was nowhere to be found on the desktop. I do have minimize encoder checked in setup, but CCE was not even in the taskbar.

I wish I could tell you more. It's almost as if DVDRB called upon CCE to begin the encoding, but CCE couldn't get completely started. It was in an endless loop. I could easily start CCE up on my own. I was even able to import an avi file for encoding.

But when I left everything up to DVDRB, CCE couldn't get to the point of encoding.

Hi there!

Just yesterday i ran into the same problem, as you did.

I backed up the R2 version of "Alien 3", which contains the theatrical version and the director's cut = large ILVU segments. Latest DVDRebuilder Pro and latest CCE Basic is used.
At the very beginning of the encoding process, CCE Basic didn't start up. DVD Rebuilder was still responsive and so i just clicked "Pause" and tried to resume. That didn't work and i had to restart the computer. After that, i could resume the encoding and it worked without any trouble.

The Result was - as always - great. Maybe there is an error in the new CCE Basic Version?

Greetings,

HolyChain

Thank you, HolyChain. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Unfortunately, I restarted my system a number of times with the same results. Maybe I can find an earlier version of CCE and see if that resolves the problem.

Maybe there is an error in the new CCE Basic Version?
Good point. As far as I know jdobbs is mostly working with CCE Basic 2.70.01.08. Maybe Cinema Craft changed something in 2.70.01.09?

So CCE was loaded, running, and showing processor usage -- but it wasn't showing on the control bar... odd.

What happens if you try to run it with "Run Encoders Minimized" unchecked?

Fairhope
8th February 2006, 20:51
It does the same thing, jdobbs. It just can't seem to get fully started.

Like HolyChain and Rippraff said, maybe CCE changed something in the new version. I'll try the previous version, 2.70.01.08, when I get home and see if that helps.

Thanks, Ty

I just checked and I'm still running v2.70.1.8... I'll download the update and see what happens.

jdobbs
8th February 2006, 21:10
Well that doesn't seem to be it. v2.70.1.9 runs fine on my computer.

------

You know... I just remembered a bug I've seen before in Windows XP Explorer... I had an application running (not DVD-RB or CCE -- I think it may have been Media Player) and it wasn't showing on the screen... but you could tell it was running by the slow response.

I opened up Task Manager, and the program was showing under "Applications". I clicked on it, and then clicked on the "Switch To" button.... and then it came up. It had been running all along (correctly) but wasn't showing visually.

Could you try that when you get a chance?

I've just tested cce basic v2.70.1.9 on my windows Xp system and all is working ok.

Will do. I'll report back later.

Thanks for your help.

jdobbs:

Just to clarify - cce never showed up under Applications in Task Manager, it only showed up under Processes. The only program to show up under Applications was DVD-Rebuilder Pro.

When I initially started this process, it was in the evening and I just let the computer run overnight. When I used HC, it usually took 5-6 hours for an encode. I had always heard CCE was faster, but it was late so I left it running all night.

The next morning, DVDRB was still running, but no CCE was showing. The log showed that the preparation phase took 13 minutes and it was now encoding, but that was 7 hours ago.

I'll keep messing around with it. It has to be something I'm doing wrong or a set up I haven't got just right - since it appears I'm the only one with the problem.

Thanks for everyone's help, though.

Ty

Don't know if you've tried this, but I'd say:

1. Reboot.
2. Before running anything, uninstall CCE Basic. If it isn't done by the uninstall -- delete the directory after its done.
3. Reinstall CCE Basic.
4. Uninstall DVD-RB
5. Reinstall DVD-RB and click on CCE Basic when the "Commercial Encoders" menu shows up.
6. Put a different disc in and rip/try it... just to be sure it's not something peculiar about the "Big Head..." disc that's the root...

Hope that helps.

ive had some issues with ilvu as well.. specifically 1.07.. i assumed it was me (still may be) .. i actually used hcenc.. encoding went fine until it hit the ilvu part.. it froze. so i hit stop and then hit start again (to continue from that segment). hcenc loads but then froze again. i tried to load the .avs and froze media player. so i looked.. appears the ilvu segment never extracted. oddly enough, on a whim, i shut down dvdrb and then reloaded it and hit rebuild (so encoding would continue) and viola.. extracted the ilvu and went straight through to the rebuild just fine. after it was done, i saw the extras looked like poo (used half d1 + 50% and the main bitrate was like 2400) so i fixed the settings to half d1 and 10% and started again. prepare went fine. got stuck on the same segment again. this time i knew to stop it.. close rb , load it again and continued and everything worked fine. this lapton has 40+gb free so wasnt a space issue. besides i didnt delete anything between closing rb and reopening again to continue.

Hmmm... I'll look at it. In the meantime, add this line to the "[Options]" area of the REBUILDER.INI:

PERSISTENT_ILVU_VOBS=1

That will keep DVD-RB from removing the VOBs when it completes its encode. See if that has an impact.

I doesn't sound like it's related to what Fairhope is seeing... but you never know.

jdobbs

@Trahald

What disc are you encoding? I'd like to try and repeat this.

Trahald
8th February 2006, 23:46
its wedding crashers 'uncorked' ntsc r1

jdobbs
9th February 2006, 01:17
If you still have it configured, could you send me your REBUILDER.INI (dvd-rb@dvd-rb.com)? I want to make sure my settings are the same as yours.

Thanks.

Why not just post the ini?

thats a pretty much vanilla config. i reproduced the anamoly again just to make sure before i tried the test with the persistent ilvu flag. im gonna try that now

jdobbs
9th February 2006, 02:57
Thanks.

It's running now. I'll let you know what I find.

Trahald
9th February 2006, 03:45
cool...

welp... i tried that setting.. but it didnt help.. dvdrb displays the 'extracting ilvu for encoding' and hcenc is called at the exact same time.. a few seconds later it switches to the segment name and waits... the file stays at 0 bytes.. ( possibly since avisynth has a handle open on the file )

jdobbs
9th February 2006, 03:50
Which segment hangs?

Trahald
9th February 2006, 03:54
v02000600060001

(might be some extra zero's)

jdobbs
9th February 2006, 03:58
Yep.... I just got there and it did it for me too. Now comes the part where I have to figure out why... hopefully I'll get it figured out and fixed early tomorrow morning. It's getting late here.

jdobbs
9th February 2006, 15:00
Ok. I found this one... it was a tough one.

The error occurs when DVD-RB is encoding an ILVU segment and the last still frame(s) extracted was from/for a menu... the ILVU video extraction fails because the flag wasn't reset properly... and it thinks its extracting from the menu VOB.

I've corrected it and will release it very soon in v1.07.1

Fairhope
9th February 2006, 17:03
I followed your advice to the letter, but no luck. CCE still hangs. I'm not at all well versed in the inner workings of DVD structure, but I'm starting to think that my problem is similar to Trahald's.

I did watch the process completely while DVDRB did it's work last night. After the prepare phase, CCE did, in fact, open up and began creating the m2v files. It was immediately after creating these files that CCE disappeared from the desktop - still running though in Task Manager's processes. The actual DVDRB program was fine, it was just waiting for CCE. I aborted this morning after no activity.

I'm looking forward to your new release to see if it fixes my problem.

Thanks, Ty

@Fairhope

I think the fix will take care of your problem too. I also tested "The Wedding Crashers" with CCE Basic... sure as can be it did exactly as you described at the same point.

@JDobbs

Tried the new version of DVD Rebuilder with "Alien 3 - Special Edition" (R2) and it worked without any errors.
Just to make sure, i tried to reproduce the error before updating to the new version, and it worked. Wow, i'm all messed up: feeling happy about an "working" error ;-)

Thank you very much for that ultra-fast fix :-)

Greetings from Germany

Same here. Worked like a charm. Big Head Todd never looked bigger.

Thanks for all your hard work.
