Hi there!
I recently bought a Motorola V550 and I found the it can play vido files with the format .3gp... anyone knows anything about this? any application to make/convert them?
I know the video stream is h263 and the audio is AMR(never heard of it :))... I also know the FFMPEG can deal with both... but I can't make it work.... if someone knows how to make ffmpeg work with this I may even make a gui for it :)

You are right... sorry... my mistake... I just posted here 'cause those files on my PC are played by Real (plugin)... and... after making a search for "Mobile Phones"... a lot of results were pointing into this forum :)

I am also interested in .3gp conversion. (Nokia 6230i)
I tried a program (demo) ImTOO 3GP Converter... the result was good, but very bad audio synch.
I have two questions:
Which audio (compression settings) format is compatible for that .3gp container?
If the video is h.263, Why I can not use XviD for that?
Greetings! :)

I haven't tested xvid yet...
here you have a great software:
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
I'm thinking about developing my own gui.. the app o that link is great but I need to reduce a little the video vbr and the fps...

Very nice if you want to create your own GUI!! :D
I've tried with XviD with the "Handheld" profile, wich uses 176x144 resolution at 256Kbps. I did the conversion with VirtualDub and finally I changed the .avi extension to .3gp. The Nokia 6230i could not play the file.
I've also tried the Nokia media player, it has the posibility to save mpeg or avi files as 3gp. Not bad, but not possible select the bitrate, as result, the quality was really bad...
Greetings! :)

Which audio (compression settings) format is compatible for that .3gp container?
AAC
AMR-NB
AMR_WB
it depends what your phone can play.
Usually phones that support MPEG-4 can play the AAC
phones that support H263 plays only AMR_NB
A very new generation of phones can now play H264 and AAC
similar to what an iPod or PSP can do.
If the video is h.263, Why I can not use XviD for that?
Cause XviD, DivX are MPEG-4 while H263 is not!
H263 is the old videoconference protocol used in the VIVO files.
Try SUPER (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=SUPER_1) recommended by Rockas

yes SUPER © works very well... I just wish it could do it with lesser fps and bitrate :(
for people with high memory phones... that app is perfect... it will do almost all the conversions you may think of :)

What do you mean by that?
Do you really expect any video bitrate less than 64 kbps
or do you work with a frame/ps less than 11.98

I was hoping to try... :)
At least a lower fps... something like 8 or even 7.

Thanks for the link mason.N, I did a few tests, better settings, but still the audio synch is not the best, acceptable, but not really right. Normally, the audio is a little bit ahead. I can imagine that 48kz AC3 to 8Kz AMR could be critical for synchronization.

I'm sorry for my ignorance, I've never used Yamb before.
I've tried your suggestion... I did a first test without audio, and the phone did not play it, I am not sure if that is because has no audio or because it was a wrong setting in XviD. Anyway, I need to place an AMR audio file, I am not sure the Nokia 6230i can handle aac in 3gp container.

I found that mobile television currently only allows one to connect to proprietary specific internet servers. Why is it the mobile providers don't allow one to connect to any internet server to view a video stream? What's the real reason?

Few days ago i compared SUPER with xilisoft for my 6230i. SUPER is freeware, xilisoft is about 29 bucks. SUPER was much better (less blocky) at 64 kbs than xilisoft.

as regards nokia6230i, i've just made some short tests and i've noticed it's not so strickt about the specs. say, the video must(should) be sp0 but videos encoded w/non-spec settings (25fps, max bitrate fairly above 64kbps, aso...) plays also fine. can anyone confirm it ?
as regards super, it's 'just' a frontend for some freeware converters which can be used separetely. 3gp is encoded with ffmpeg/mencoder and muxed with mp4box.

My Nokia N70 plays mp4 files@25fps if they comply to QuickTime's 3GPP(Mobile MP4) profile, and the footage it shoots is at that format as well. The motion is damn smooth. The only problem is that it lags or skips frames when the video is of a more "desktop" bitrate or when it has to do downscaling.
And it also has an interesting peculiarity. Enen though it shoots photos at 2 megapixels, when shooting video, the resolution rises to 4 megapixels.

I'll have to try out Super. I have been using mpegable x4 to create 3gp files and they aren't bad, better than imtoo 3gpconvert. I have a motorola rokr e1 and so far the max settings I have used are 108kbt(video) mpeg4, 32kbt(audio)lc-aac at any rate, 15fps, at 176x144 resolution. The resulting video is a little blocky for my liking and the audio is slightly ahead of the video, but not so bad that it is unwatchable. Has anyone figured out a way to put xvid in a 3gp container. I would really like to try that cause mpegable make me use their codec and I think xvid would look better, if my phone can even play it. If anyone has experience with creating video's on this phone please let me know about it. I will check back after I have used Super.

1. I think that this topics would be moved into the " New and alternative a/v containers" section.
2. You can use MP4Box to place MPEG-4 made with XviD into 3GP, you have just to use the -3gp option (it works also if you simply give the .3gp extension to your file while writing with MP4Box, soemthing like -new "C:\My3gp.3gp".
I dunno if your mobile phone can allow MPEG 4 and at what level is allowed, but you wouldn't have problem if you use Simple Profile@Level 0 (but maybe you can also use higher level, it depends upon your mobile phone).
I've tried MP4Box with Nokia 3330 and several other mobile phone of different brand (LG, Sony, NEC) and I din't have problem.
3. Nokia Converter sucks, and imo it's generally better to use XviD than H263. Mobile Hackers 3GP converter use an XviD engine (into FFMPEG), and it has several profile for compatible issue (but they are mainly useful for NTT Docomo Mobile MP4 mobile phone and some stupid 3GPP2 mobile phone).

Don't worry for the japanese page, the program is in english too.
An other hint for the 3GP muxer: in MP4Box you can use the -agg N (N is an integer number between 1-15) to compress the audio size, it works only with amr. You can do the same thing in QT, anyway.

you could always try to demux .amr audio to .wav and use avisynth to frameserve .3gp video into some other application. just a suggestion.
