Hi everyone,just wondering if there are any color enhancing filters that would work on Laserdisc captured avi files?

The only method i know about is one, you can't use ATM. Don't know whether they release a VDub-filter with that technology:

if you just mean tweaking hue, saturation, contrast, etc, there's heaps you can do:

- levels
- tweak
- coloryuv

and there's loads of little helper things that let you separate out colours and filter them separately (like giving blue colours a stronger denoise, which is useful for film-originated stuff or 1-chip camera sources).

Oooh! DeepDVD, that would be the perfect last step for my debanding filter! I'd love to try that out. Maybe I'll email Dmitriy and see if he's willing to let me test it, at least just for my own purposes. Doubtful. ;_;

Thanks guys,I captured the Star Wars Japanese Special collection Trilogy,and IVTC'd,cropped out the Japanese subtitles,recentered the video and made it anamorphic widescreen(also used denoisers and seesaw etc.),now i would like to enhance the colors,for example,Blacks crispper, and make the Whites Brighter,gold of 3PO brighter,and brighten the Blue and Red on R2,just an overall color enhancement,if this is possible,a friend said that TMPGEnc Plus has color enhancemant capabilities,but i would like to keep learning Avisynth.

this is the kind of stuff i'd love to see a GUI for, but yes, avisynth can do pretty extensive colour adjustments.

however, if you're wanting to go nuts on this source, you might consider outputting it in RGB, then doing a colour grade in after effects, scene by scene.

of course, avisynth is much cheaper and offers just as good tools, but GUI can be quite important with this stuff. a good compromise might be taking screenshots and adjusting them in the Gimp, then using GiCoCu to import gimp's colour curves into avisynth.

So what is the plan on this, are they planning on sharing the process and scripts that they used? I checked out the site, lots of good ideas but nothing about how they implemented the solutions (like the star field twinkle problem). I emailed them about that a week or so ago and have not heard a word from them.

If you find out anything, please do share that info - I saw that filter and it sounds very promising. If we could get the theory/algo behind it, I'm sure it could be ported to avisynth - I might even try tackling that one myself... (inbetween writing code for 3 embedded projects at work ;)

That plugin is supposed to be a functional equivalent of

tdeint(mode=-1,type=3).turnleft().tdeint(mode=-1,type=3).turnright()

Game, I looked at your source and the chroma noise the toughest part to fix. Lots of splotches in the white backgrounds (see below). You might want to address this issue before you enhance the colors. I'm at a loss as to how to get rid of it.

BTW, a friend worked on the restoration of the trilogy. Temp job, post processing after the initial cleaning (which is a proprietary technology). It was a frame-by-frame process. He said a good day was when he could get through 20 frames. They had shifts of staff doing this day in and day out for months.

Well, it's closer to the same process using eedi2, but I'd wager it uses more advanced methods, such as the well known B-spline or Jensen-Xin Li, or a customized variation of such. The better the resizing, the more horribly slow it gets though...

Wow, that looks awful. I'd recommend using FFT3DFilter(sigma=X,plane=3,bw=32,bh=32,bt=3,ow=16,oh=16) with X set to at least 3 and/or Cnr2("xxx",4,5,255).

thanks guys for all the info,and as far as the X0 project,i am a member at originaltrilogy dot com(Dark_Jedi),and that is where the X0 team resides,and they are very helpful, if you ask there,and most answer emails as well,and yes this will be released when finished,as far as i know,i will try some of the above suggestions,but i have a small problem in my video after i encode to dvd too,the IVTC looks good,except for the beginning when the camera pans down to the star destroyer attacking leia's ship,the picture stutters,but after that very smooth,any ideas on this?

That stuttering might be a section of film where it is pure interlaced rather than Telecined. Go through the original frame by frame in that area and see if that's the case.

He's talking about Star Wars here - it's all film so there can't be any interlaced video sections.

thegame: I don't know what you are using to IVTC, but if you are involved in a restoration project you might as well go for what is considered to be the best (albeit probably slowest) automatic IVTC method:

For TFF clips:

AssumeTFF()
Interp = SeparateFields().SelectEven().EEDI2(field=1)
Deinted=TDeint(order=1,field=1,edeint=Interp)
TFM(mode=6,order=1,PP=7,slow=2,mChroma=true,Clip2=Deinted)
TDecimate(mode=1)


For BFF clips:

Interp = SeparateFields().SelectEven().EEDI2(field=0)
Deinted = TDeint(order=0,field=0,edeint=Interp)
TFM(mode=6,order=0,PP=7,slow=2,mChroma=true,Clip2=Deinted)
TDecimate(mode=1)

You need to download EEDI2, TDeint and TIVTC. Since your capture has big chroma artifacting, you should use mChroma=false

Chainmax,that appears to have worked:
For BFF clips:

TDecimate(mode=1)

but it took 40mins to encode a 1 minute clip LOL
i guess it will take 3 days to do the whole movie WOW

Yeah, that was to be expected: you are combining the slowest options of TIVTC and a slow deinterlacer (TDeint) that uses an interpolator (EEDI2) as backup. By the way, are you sure it's BFF? I don't know about Laserdiscs, but DVDs are usually TFF if I'm not mistaken.

well it looks right,how i determined BFF is when i encode with TMPGEnc Plus(i use CCE SP now),it automatically puts it at BFF,never have i seen TFF,from any of my LD captures,from the TMPGEnc Plus Wizard.

TMPGEnc knows nothing about the field order and the same goes with any other encoder. You must determine it manually to be sure.

TMPGEnc does work determine the field order itself, and it seemed to get it right every time I tried it (I used it with interlaced video a lot before I found out about QuEnc and HC).

I recall that when I used it, it didn't show consistent results at all. That is, sometimes BFF, sometimes TFF for my captures which I knew to be TFF. The only working "automatic" method I would trust is DGIndex for MPEG2 files.
