View Full Version : DVD shrink has slowed almost to a halt.

Having used DVD shrink for several years, with minor glitches here and there, am using version 3.2.
I am grateful it exists.
All of a sudden yesterday the processing time has slowed to almost a halt.
I DVD decrypted a dvd that was scratched very badly, then tried to dvd shrink the *.ISO file
After four (4) hours I canceled DVD shrink.
Usual processing time has been about 60 minutes or less often 30 minutes, or so for a previously dvd decrypted file.
I uninstalled DVD shrink and reinstalled DVD Shrink 3.2 after re-booting my system.
Tried to shrink a totally different dvd, and again the DVD Shrink processing is so slow that I canceled that project.
Processing time of DVD decrypter is normal: about 25 minutes.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Robert

Hi!
1) It sounds like DMA has been turned off for your drives and they've reverted to PIO mode. Search the forums here for liks regarding re-implementing DMA
2) If re-implementing DMA doesn't resolve your problem, perform a "System Restore" back to the last time things were working properly...

Thanks!!
Winsows XP Home, System Restore to prior to the slowdown got DVD Shrink working fine.
Thanks again,
Robert

Bug is back, and system is running slow. DMA is set correctly.
Went back further on system restore and that did not help.
Please advise.

How much empty space do you have on the hard drive or drives that are used? Is it slow when using either hd? Is your anti-virus up-to-snuff? Your hard drive could be starting to fail.

Am pleased to report that DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 has worked by loading Shrink on the external 250GB storage HDD and Shrinking from a DVD via my internal Toshiba sdr 2312 cd/dvd-rom drive, to an ISO file on the 250GB HDD.
Also the buffered amount during the shrink process never exceeded 110MB, fluctuating from 30 MB to 110 mb.
Please note: The issue of out of memory (related to my 40GB HDD)
is not resolved but for now I seem
to be able to use DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15, my main objective.
Will test shrinking/ encoding a few more DVD's in this manner.
Thanks for all your collective help in this matter.
I have learned a load of stuff in the process.
And will continue to learn, disect and resolve
the main issue of using Shrink on my internal HDD.

Herein lies the problem as it developed...
When putting DVD Shrink on my 40 GB HDd internal, it causes a memory glitch.
When using DVD SHrink on my external 250GB HDD seems to work fine.
The problem:
Had uninstalled and reinstalled shrink several times defragging and all the good clean up stuff.
No serious trojans or spyware or viruses.
DMA working, paging file at normal : 600mb to 1300mb.
So,
I DVD Decrypted a file to an ISO about 6GB.
Shrink encodes and buffers the file and bloats teh buffered location, never moves the buffered amount to the ISO assigned file.
Which is what it used to do transferring portions of the file, keeping buffer at about 85mb, not too much...
Shrink crashes ...
at about 1300 mb buffered amount
(like a balloon bursting from too much air)
consistent with setting of paging file.
Remember I used shrink for a few years so most of my basic computer settings are 'normal'.
I tested shrink on several of my dvd movies and the crashes still occur, all at the same place, at 1300mb buffered amount, and not only for the ISO file.
Yet actual buffered amount of file size at crash in ISO file for all crashed movies is consistently 65 mb.
Resetting paging file (upping size) did not help and I screwed my system up so reset it back to 600mb - 1300mb as that is where it was up till a few weeks ago anyway.
Please help.
I am a few steps away from formatting my HDD and reinstalling OS (windows xP home Sp2) and all my software, as I suspect something has gone amiss via the shrink problem.
My basic memory is 512 mb and shrink has worked perfectly up till I admittedly tried to shrink a damaged (very badly) scratched) dvd movie that eventually decrypted with many many errors.
One failure of DVD shrink back then said 'programming error."
Please put all your thinking caps on.
Please note I tested using trial version DVD FAB and that works ( but FAb transfers file to a temp folder) so I suspect my problem may be in DVD Shrink internal aspect/ programming somewhere.
This is so baffling but it is a computer so the problem is logical and the solution should also be rational.
I appreciate all your help.
Confused,
Robert

1) Have you emptied the "Temp" folder on your 40Gb drive?
2) Have you emptied your "Recycle bin" and, if you have Norton installed, the Norton "Recycle bin"?

Herein lies the problem as it developed...
RJL24: Very early in this thread, HardwareGeek asked you to report on the amount of available free space on both of these hard drives. This was also my first thought when I began to read of your symptoms. However, we still have no clue as to whether that 40GB drive has sufficient available room left on it to allow Windows to do its usual "memory swap" where it needs to create huge swap files to store operations once you have used up all of the actual RAM which is available.
Please, satisfy our suspicions and eliminate one possible cause of your problems -- and let us know how much free space there is on both of your hard drives.
I also recommend you clear any temp directories, especially on the 40GB drive, and your Recycle bin as well.
Thanks,
-Bruce
