i bought a second stand alone player, a philips 3010 for div x movies.
works fine with divx ,but not with all my dvd i have reauthored.
my old 50$ player works better than my new philips 120$ drive.my old dvd player plays ALL dvd I have inserted, the phiilips, maybe 80-90% of my movies.
so I am keeping both as a backup.
what do you think?

Are some of your movies burned on a particular type of media? I.e. DVD+R/-R, or using multisession?

no mutlisession...tested on a philips 3010
i did some test on 35 dvd+-r (DVD movies)
sony, verbatim,tdk,sky,Octron
used dvd shrink, HC and CCE
here the results:
5 disc are not working , all TDK+R
6 disc works after second attempt tray it/out/in
the rest work fine, specially the sony media!
----
all div x work, any disc...
----
I have a old cheap roadstar: all dvd work except DIVX(not for divx).
my conclusion:
there are so many factors during the whole process of a backup that is hard to tell what media , burner , encoder , version,...are the best.
I gave a look on cd freaks, and they talk and talk endless about media. even a good media, with a good burner doesnt work at 100%.depends of the player, of the chip in the player, the speed of your burn, the authoring software.
but i can tell you with 2-3 players stacked on each over, you have few chance to not be able to read a disc.so dont throw away your old players and dont buy only one brand of media for compatibility reasons.

what s your player, and how does it work with your backups?
