HC 016 : Why so slow on my computer?

I'm in the middle of encoding an xvid to dvd on my computer.

P4\2.4 ghz non-HT
1 gig PC 3200 ddr (dual channel)
160 gb Seagate 7200 PATA drive

file is approx 1:44:00 in length
1st pass took 1:26:34

2nd pass time used: 26:21
time left: 3:41:26

No AVS filters used,

Average fps on second pass: 10

Any ideas on why it is so slow?

I ran into this problem, too. I don't know what's causing it, but with some sources it works flawlessly and with others it's incredibly slow on the second pass. I have a P4 3.2 Ghz HT.
One thing I remember was Madagascar. There were about 15 min black video and HC took an eternity on the second pass although it was very easy to encode and ended up with about 200 kbit/s.

xvid source = long GOP.

HC when it finds VBV underflows (or the possibility of one), it re-encodes the current GOP. this probably means nonlinear frame access, which long GOP sources aren't good at.

to try this yourself, try load the same xvid in virtualdub, skip half an hour in, then try seek backwards a frame at a time. you'll find it far slower than seeking forward :)

if this really is the problem (not just a stab in the dark after a few beers at my end), then it can be pretty easily sped up by caching frames. this probably happens anyway...

btw, expect the 2nd pass to be slower than the first. it's pretty normal because more is being done.
