Hi
Video forums go ballistic when I state: "Why edit video at all"
I have had my digital camcorder for 3 years now.
There is no need to edit video,
I just have my computer, skip over the offensive material or mistakes.
You just get more good video, when you are out shooting and shooting
as compared to sitting and sitting in front of a computer, bit fiddling.

You just seem to be going around inciting flamewars.
So what was your question again? "Why edit video"?
Answer: Because I feel like it.

That's your perogative. The forums are there for people who want to edit. Not much reason for anyone who doesn't to waste time with them. Editing is what you do to present your vision to others. (And to more conveniently present it to yourself, if you care enough.) God knows I leave most of what I obtain unedited, reshaping is too much trouble unless I really need the space. What I make is a different story.
I don't understand why you post here when you already posted elsewhere, and obtained satisfactory answer. Besides "lol lookit them flame what noobs". Silly how much time you've wasted typing up all those replies though.

Are you sure they're going ballistic? They might just being laughing really hard.
Why edit video? Because 95% of what most people shoot is pure garbage and the only intent you can have with not editing it is to cause others to suffer when you ask them to watch it, even if they can FF. How about to save storage space?

Kinda hoping there would be a few passionate responses.
Its obvious from the thread you made on the other forum that you are trying to elicit a certain response. Its not that video forums just go ballistic when you post that, its that you want "passionate responses" (A flame war) and you think that statement will cause them.
You also mention several times that It is a waste of time to learn how to use editing software, or that Learning to use editing software is a lot of work. Which may be true, but learning how to shoot footage well is also time consuming, and thats obviously worth learning how to do correctly.

I think you have been watching too much reality t.v. Just because you can film, tape or digitize some cr*p footage doen't mean someone else wants to watch it. But, you did get a response.

Why they are going ballistic, is that I'm right.
There is absolutely no reason to edit.
Edit, if you need to compress the action, to fit a television time slot
or slip in a commercial here or there.
Very few of those registered, at these forums are professionals
or ever will be.
People are so accustomed, of seeing 5 seconds from this angle,
then 3 seconds from another, that they think, that's the way to do it.
Unedit video, is a refreshing change from commercial tv or movies.
Why I'm on these forums, is to expose the BIG lie.
The only points, I'm being attacked on, are my weaker ones.
It's the points, that they don't attack me on, that should be brought to the fore.
-If you shoot lots, you will get more good video (The law of averages)
-If you shoot lots, you'll quickly get very good with the camera. (Experience)
-The most important part, of a good video, starts with the camera.
-Learn to shoot down the barrel of the camera.
(with the sun over your shoulder, you won't see anything in the display screen)
(you can't follow the pitch, with your eye in the view finder either)
-Editing can be extremely expensive and time consuming.
.
.
There are quite a few others statements that, they couldn't disagree with.
Some of my video, may be crap to you.
You edit freaks should know crap.
That's the result, when you don't get the video, in the first place.

Why do anything?
Because I can
Why do this?
Because I feel like it.
Why should I justify my actions to you?
I don't feel I need to, so I won't
Why are you here, suggesting this?
Because you enjoy annoying others by questioning the merits of their pursuits? Please go away :)

I am no professional at photography, I do not make any profit from it.
But it does not mean that I do not know what I am doing. Nor does it it make me any less able to give advice or pass on experience. By the way i've been doing it for 20 years.

All the yapping, did get me off my ass.
Just got back from the regional figure skating finals.
(With no video)
Can't shoot without a release by the skater.
Had to check with the event tech, etc etc.
I did make some contacts though.
Maybe next week, I can get some good video of
the local top skater. (With a camera on the ice)
The Big lie is that "video sites" never even mention
the possibility of not editing anything. Why is that?
Too many loudmouth bullies screaming them down, no doubt.
I'm pretty sure MACC, that most of your photo's are left untouched.
Editing is often done, because most scenes are fake.
The camera can't follow the subject out the door,
when there is nothing beyond.
We are talking about amature video not commercial footage.
If you have real news footage and spend too much time doing "enhancements".
It will be yesterday's news/fakery and nobody will be interested.

you have been around awile.
Its people not animals here. So you might want to get to know the people
on sites by reading their fourms maybe posting something interesting
on them. Don't insult everyone on them by saying they are unprofessional its the internet. No one knows who they
are unless you talk to them or read their posts, most of the times you can get a feel for who they are.
If you start out of the gate by tripping the other horses you may end up getting tripped.
As far as BIG LIE
#1 Maybe word your post differently something like:
Hey I was just thinking with all this editing of video that people like doing. Does anyone prefer
not to edit their video. Just a thought and a preference that I have.
#2 Don't assume its only because that site prefers those edit methods.
#3 The ovious
#4 That insulting and flaming thing.
Sometimes video and photos edited look much cooler and flow much better in their presentation and in the stories that they try or hope to convey. Including Commercial and commercials.
Wildlife video does look best unedited because its nature. Even in those shows that show wildlife going nuts. Its raw footage at its best.
Some photos that I do deserves to be edited just because they would enhance the visual pleasantness and bring
the veiwers eye that much closer to what the picture means. In other words it looks cool.I don't know what it is
but it looks cool.
Also it would seem that people that shoot commercial video had to start at amature video.
Is this the flaming post, time to move on.

Why do people edit video? To present the essence of the material in a concise and entertaining manner with the stylistic preference and atmospheric vision of the director applied and with any format conversion necessary for the target audience.
If all you want to do is present real life events as they happened and you're such a pro with the camera that you always get the lighting and shot setup perfect first time then there's maybe not as much need to edit, but not everyone wants to do that and most people aren't quite so perfect ;)

Editing a is sort of like a songwriter who writes a song. A songwriter will write pages and pages of lyrics, yet he/she doesn't use all of them, since they wouldn't flow into a condusive pattern. The songwriter edits their lyrics until they fit into a song thats coherant and makes sense to the mind and to the imagination.
I do, however, believe that some people do overedit video. Sometimes there is a magical feeling of watching raw video or raw audio that edited video doesn't offer. It's sort of like watching a freestyle rapper who sometimes makes mistakes and sometimes makes good rhymes while he/she is in "the zone".

On a similar note, I wish Hollywood movies were less trimmed down - I don't mind sitting in a theater for 3 hours instead of 2 if it means that the story is more engaging and feels less "produced" or spliced-together.

why are you guys even bothering with this person ? its pretty obvious from his statements and language that all he wants is either yes men or a fight. he got answers and doesnt want to accept them so just ignore him. i know i dont need this persons permission to edit down the 3 hours of footage i took of my son to just 2 hours to make it more interesting and flow better for not only myself but my parents etc. and neither does anybody else.
as for professionals on this forum, yes there is. i know several whos jobs are video related to mass market, eg. professional dvd video production. thats hardly relevant to people wanting to edit their own home shot footage though.

If you want to be a nut, be a nut. But, find something more interesting to be a nut about than whether to edit video. How about if you insist that there is an alien city on the far side of the moon and that the government is covering it up? Then you can tell us how people go ballistic when you state: "There is an alien city on the far side of the moon and that the government is covering it up."

perhaps the OP should be on an art forum rather than a video editing or encoding-related forum?
btw, my 2 cents: don't over edit, don't under edit. it'll end up either exhausting and nonsensical or boring as sin. good editing is simply a matter of being able to tell a good story.

how much of the discussion evolves around video editing problems.
Sound out of sync it the most common. (Results are pure C***)
There are a ton of others, that are video editing related.
Don't get too distracted, by the technology and forget the camera.
I could watch hours, of unedit video if it were:
a camera hovering over a salt marsh, during peak breeding season.
Someone strolling a zoo. The keepers, would be in the best position.
A bushmans forest exploits.
etc etc.
Refreshing, to see a few others, comming forward with points
that support my side.

How about a walk through a gallery or museum, the downstairs stuff. Unedited.
When you start editing, it immediately gets too expensive and time consuming.

I've been editing for some years using (S)VHS/ DV(CAM) / D9 etc.. and all these formats can be easily and precisely edited - and I've never ever (!) had a sound out of sync problem with formats that are supposed to be editable (=! MPEG*).
I still dont see you obesession with unedited footage - sure if you like it do it, noone is stopping you.
For me as a (hobby) editor its sometimes simple horror what some people shoot and I have to edit it down to a certain length. Having to wade through 90% of the tape to just find the shots actually required to tell a story about X or Y is a pain in the ass.
If you want to tell a story about DVD ripping then you certainly wont bore the adience with what you had as breakfast.. would you? ;)

Hi Communist
I'm sure you are good at editing.
Years of doing it, tends to make you that way.
Being obsessed with not editing, has taught me a thing or 2 as well.
One point, I always try and get across (to eliminate the need for editing)
Is to keep the video clips short, maybe even very short.
It's way easier, to just play one after the other,
than to start segmenting the videos.
I would commonly stop, the video on swear words.
(but don't anymore)
It's less destructive, to just cut the end off a video,
(or not play that part, on a computer version)
without altering it's content.
If the breaks arn't made at the proper places, then what do you have.
I'm the camera man, I make the breaks and they are often.
So, by doing what I'm doing, it's much simpler.
If you have nothing interesting, on a short video or something offensive.
Just don't play it.
I keep all my original video. It's just simpler that way.
No breakfast shots but the morning sun comming up at full zoom
for 10 or 15 seconds, is always pleasant.
I do get by without editing.
foxyshadis
5th February 2006, 01:32
If you pick and choose things to play or not play, aren't you editing? Aren't you taking time with no one watching but yourself to figure out which clips connect well? Even if you don't edit up individual shots, even if you just always fast forward one section, you're still editing the video as a whole afterward.
lolz.

not really surprising looking at the tone and language you have used in this thread alone. being insultive and agressive and dismissing what others reasons as you do doesnt make you freinds.
That Virtual Dub sounds like my kind of software.
and you seem to know very little ,if anything, about the heaps of free software out there. yet think you can happily post how expensive editing is. yes it takes time but thats for the person to decide if its worth it and not you. same applies to commercial software and cost, that is not your decision.
also these types of forums you mention can give aid to those you wish to edit ,for whatever reason, to simply help people achieve what they want to do. if you are not interested in the subject matter of the forums then you can either not go to them or only read things you are interested in.
what it comes down to is that whatever people are editing and how it is not being done for you and you will probably never see it. so how is it any of your business and what right do you think you have to tell anyone they are doing the wrong thing ?
i dont have the right to tell you that your footage looks crap unedited, i havent seen it and not interested to, and you dont have the right to tell me my edited footage looks crap either. please get the message and stop.

is there an echo ? :)
repeating yourself doesnt make it any more or less true or false than the first time you said it.
so let me repeat aswell, whether its expensive or time consuming is none of your business. its up to others to decide for themselves if the cost, whether financial or time, is worth it or not.
I could easily walk thru a museum or gallery,
add a tour guide and have riveting video.
and i could do the same and with a little selective editing make it even more interesting or flow better or even just remove the parts i have no interest in. i personally would rather do that than have to skip or fastforward those parts every time i watched it, which seems to be what you do from your earlier posts.
That's what, you should be doing some more of.
Editing less.
according to you. however since you have never seen anything i have edited nor ever will what do you think gives you the right to tell me i should be editing less or not at all ? let me answer for you. you have absolutly no right at all so should just stop pushing your agenda now.
