View Full Version : not your average out of sync problem...

For some reason, when doing a 3cd encode (2150400) the audio (MP3) gradually goes out of sync when i mux. HOWEVER, 1 and 2 cd encodes are flawless. The audio length matches the video length, and this also happens when using the ac3 audio from the dvd as well. I am not IVTC'ing to 23.976, thus it does not seem like a framerate error. I have read forum posts, guides, ect and no out of sync post matches my problem. I am using Koepi's XviD 1.1. Is this an error with the codec itself? Becuase it is driving me nuts!

well I don't see a 3rd pass option in xvid. so I will assume that you are doing something the codec doesn't like. Two pass is more than enough for xvid to crush all it's asp competitors. stick with two pass.

lol... maybe i worded badly... i DO 2pass... its when i do a 3 CD encode as in 700mbx3 = 2150400kb - :)

Don't know what happen to your encodings, but I can advice you the software Avifrate1.10 which can change the framerate of an .avi file without re-packing it (like in VirtualDub) - it could save you a lot of time. Modify the framerate only _slightly_.
I had once this problem with a specific movie (I remember it was a 3 CDs backup, but did not try with 2 CDs - so cannot say if the problem is related - it was because of the DVD structure).
Does it happen with other sources?

I dont really want to modify the framerate, but what do you mean by other sources? i have only used XviD for DVD's.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough... Other sources = other DVDs
My question should have been: does it happen on one specific DVD or doest it happen with every 3CD-backup you do?
I dont really want to modify the framerate
Yes, of course. But if you don't find where is the problem, you may be forced to do that in order to watch your encodings... ;)

nope, it happens on every 3cd backup. But like i said, works just dandy on 1 and 2CD backups.

Did you try other muxing software?
(VirtualDubMod, AVIMux, Matroska Merger GUI (-> .mkv))
nonphixion
2nd February 2006, 21:19
yes i tried VDM and AVIMux, and still the same problem. And the audio gradually plays before the video by the way.

Just to eliminate one possibility: what is your OS? What is your hard drive format (NTFS/FAT32)?
Since Win98/FAT32 cannot handle >2GB file, this possible _could_ come to my mind...
(even if there should be warnings in the software you use)

Things I would check (and maybe you already did):
- try other players
- try to play it with VirtualDubMod
- are you using a sync filter such as ReClock? (if not, then try)
- are the duration/nulber of frames equal in both 2CDs and 3CDs encodings?
- try last stable version (XviD 1.0.3)

OK, i will try your suggestions. i will edit when i find out
edit:: -other players have same prob
-VDM gives me a memory access violation when trying to play it, jerky playback and the audio loops about every 3 seconds
-havent tried encoding the 3cd encodes to 2cd, however i am positive they would work as 2cd's
-sync filter doenst work
-i see the latest stable as 1.1 =\
more to come..

You should try anyway and verify it.
-i see the latest stable as 1.1 =\
Yeah, sorry. The _previous_ stable version.
But I'm pretty sure it's an audio muxing/playback/whatever problem and has nothing to do with XviD.
Have you tweaked the audio interleaving settings in VDubMod?
nonphixion
3rd February 2006, 07:16
yes ive tried tweaking the interleaving in vdub mod...its set at interleave every 1ms.. and if it wasnt a problem with xvid why wouldnt the AC3 audio work either?
jon.schaffer

Try with the default value (it should be every 1 frame).

3rd February 2006, 07:33
still no dice....im trying with the older xvid build right now...will edit later
::edit:: Ok, so i tried encoding with 1.0.3, and also using meGUI rathrer than VirtualDub, and the same problem. Seriously, i have no idea what else could be the problem. Is it possible at all that 512MB of RAM is not enough? Becuase at this point i am completely stumped.

It looks like a muxing error to me. The 3CD thing doesn't make sense. I made a 3CD of Back to the Futrue the other day when I was doing quality comparrissions with x264 and it worked perfectly. COuld you also try a different container? mkv and mp4 perhaps?

3 CD is greater than 2 gb. The resulting AVI file must be OpenDML compliant. Maybe one of your involved tools do not read/write OpenDML AVI correctly. Xvid version does not matter. Try to encode video with latest stable vdub only. Then add audio (the resulting file is OpenDML and does not play correctly with pure Windows Media Player). Then split. If it does not work try AvimuxGUI.

can you suggest a player to try and use? i've tried VLC, but the same thing happens.
jon.schaffer

If all player fail, then you _must_ find what happens during muxing. Can you report the result when using Matroska Merger? And/or using VirtualDubMod with the default value in the interleaving settings?

OK, i was wrong. I tried doing a 2CD encode of the movie and it is still out of sync. I was so frustrated i did some other 2CD encodes, and a 1CD encode inbetween and everything worked good. This is just bizarre. How come only _some_ movies are out of sync and others work fine? the source is pure NTSC interlaced, left the same as on the source so IVTC couldnt be a problem. I am in desperate need of some help.

As it's not related to XviD, you may ask your question in another forum area. But I don't know which one would be the best. DVD Decrypting I guess? (I think the problem is related to this DVD structure).

If that is the problem then he should have VDub segment the output at 700 MB per segment as it is encoding, which should avoid the openDML issue completely.

I tried doing a 2CD encode of the movie and it is still out of sync.It seems it's not a file-size limit issue, here.

What procedure are you using to get it from the source (DVD?) to the AVI?

DVD->DVDDecrypter->DVD2AVI->create .avs->.avs into vdub

I have the same problem...I'm very lucky with interleaving since i'm good at it, before i had it all perfect then it started happened to me...

I maybe had the same problem. The DVD was Cameron's Aliens (R2). This DVD had the two versions of the movie (were each trunk of the movie stored only once on the DVD but played back in two different ways - I don't know - I did not investigate). At the end of the movie, audio was more than one or two seconds delayed.
The only solution was to very slightly change the frame rate (several tests were needed). Playing back with ReClock filter: the original framerate was restored, and the sound was stretched to fit to the new length.
When Alien3 DVD did the same, I did the same...
These are the only DVDs I encountered who lead to this issue.

I don't know if it has anything to do with your problem or not, but DVD2AVI is outdated, and has been superceded by DGMPGDec (http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/dgmpgdec.html) (DGIndex + DGDecode.dll). You might want to try it that way.

I never had the problem with dvd, but when its something I recorded with a dvd recorder, I have the worse problems.
What is Reclock and where can i get it?

What is Reclock and where can i get it?
Reclock (http://reclock.free.fr/) is a DirectShow filter that slightly adjust the speed of the soundtrack in order to allow the video framerate to be perfectly played back. This allows a smoother playback. You must use a screen refresh rate that is a multiple of the video framerate.
This filter does not change the synchronization of the audio.
