I have put up a small review of DivX 6.0, and XviD 1.0.3 and 1.1.0. The review is on the movie Snow White and the seven dwarfs.

Enjoy ;)

Hi pieroxy, Apart from an average bitrate of 1000kbps, I'm interested to know which settings you used for these, and if there is a reason you chose not to use DivX 6.1.1?

Hi,

I used all the default settings. My approach was that most users (the most unexperienced ones) will just leave it 'as is'.

However, I am interested in knowing which settings you would suggest for me to do some further reviews.

As far as DivX 6.1.1, well, I had 6.0 installed and planned (at first) to do only a XviD bench. DivX 6.1.1 is definitely going to follow in a few days.

You managed to compare DivX with playback PostProcessing <ON> vs. XviD with playback PostProcessing <OFF>. Congratulations.

Well... How many people do you think just leave these settings the way they are and live off with that? I bet quite a few.

The point is that the default settings is most often what people will see first, and often always. Not you, of course, not a bunch of people in these forums for sure.

As I said, I am open to any criticism and instead of ranting on how 'irrelevant' my comparison is, you'd better make a constructive comment on how you'd like to see the next one. That's if you want to help of course ;)

But then you're comparing the overall 'package' rather than the strength of the encoder. Most people dont even use the packaged XviD decoder so maybe at least you should point out that there is PP going on in one decoder while its off in the other.
Though I think it should be turned off for proper encoder comparison.

Well... I agree this is a bit unfair to some codecs. But then you are making an assumption that "Most people dont even use the packaged XviD decoder" for which I am doubtful. Do you have numbers to back that up? If true, my comparison will be not that interesting...

But more than a comparison, I am trying to set up a bunch of comparisons. That one is just the first one and with the feedback I am getting I will get out more or them.

For my next comparison , I am thinking of using only one codec (XviD for example) and then using different codecs for rendering (DivX, XviD, ffdshow, proprocessing on and off, etc...). That would be a comparison of renderers of course, not of codecs ;)

Does that sound like a useful test to you?

The one useful thing I noticed is that the newest xvid seems to cause a lot more chroma bleeding/discoloration when stressed than 1.0.3 and divx.

Glad to know there is at least one useful thing in the review ;)

However, can you point to me the parts where you noticed this? I didn't notice it on any of the frames...
