View Full Version : Force RGB ouput on S-VHS of ATI X700

I have a new toy for playing around: An Asus Laptop with an ATI X700 and TV-out via one S-VHS output jack(7pins). (I hope that was the right terminus)
My tv has a S-VHS input jack with 4 pins, and I can connect the Laptop with the TV with a S-VHS cable with 4 lines. In the TV, I can choose two different channels to get the Laptop output on the screen. One is called S-VHS RGB, and the Laptop desktop becomes greyscaled on the TV screen. The other is called YC2 and the laptop desktop is displayed just perfectly on the TV screen ( I think that my graphics card provides luma and croma information).
Now the problem: The TV of my girlfriend can only handle RGB input from its 4-pin S-VHS input jack (taken from manual), so there I only get a greyscaled laptop desktop. Is there a way to force RGB output via the output jack? I have looked the driver dialogs up and down and did not find any clues. Any suggestions?

tvtool definitely sounds intereisting, but is for nVIDIDA graphics cards only, mine is a ATI Mobility Radeon X700. :(

That sounds highly dubious. TV sets usually only take RGB signals from a SCART socket. Graphics cards usually can't output TV-compatible RGB video without some modification.

in US, scart isn't used that much in TVs . s-video, composite(RCA), RF is more common .

if your laptop have both 4 pin & 7 pin s-video (aka S-VHS, YC) port, even then, you will not get RGB, see pinout & signal at the mentioned post .
to get RGB from the laptop to feed on that TV with 4 pin RGB port ...
from the other tv's manual, if necessary, from tech manual, find the other tv's 4 pin RGB port's signal (R, G, B, S) pin location . if you can't find that, then you'll have to do some permutation & combination in the next last step .
which is, get an VGA to RGB converter adapter, if your laptop have VGA out, or, get a S-Video to RGB converter adapter, to use it on your laptop's S-Video port . this adapter's RGB output will have (4) connection for R, G, B, S port, usually RCA/tulip socket . you also have to buy a (very cheap) s-video cable & two composite (RCA/tulip) video cable . each rca composite vid cable has 3 rca jack on both end .
cut S-Video cable (somewhere in the middle) . cut 1 (Composit) video (RCA) cable somewhere in the middle . in S-Video cable, you will get 4 wire and 1 shielding wire/mesh . on rca vid cable, you'll get 3 pairs of (3x2=6) wires . cut the other rca vid cable's only one part, out of 3 part, you'll get 2 more wires .
now uncover the wire part out of those (shielded) cables/wires, so you can connect copper wires, one with another .
plug in the rca vid cable's one end into that (vga/s-vid to rgb)converter's / adapter's RGB port side, 4 rca/bnc port . plug in s-vid cable's one end into that other tv's rgb (4 pin) port .
tie together 4 ground/mesh wires, which are coming out from the converter's rgb port side . and connect that to the shielding cable wire of the s-video cable .
now you have 4 open (hot) wires at the rca vid cable's side and 4 open wires at the s-vid cable's side .
try out different connection combination, until you see the desktop in color without jumping .
