now that there is a commandline version of dgpulldown http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=106368
it looks like a movie only mode for pal 2 ntsc conversion is becoming a more reasonable possiblity.
Just wanted to let ppl know about the new interface in case they missed the doom9 headline

Yes, this is sweet news. Also, now that Jdobbs has been working on menu processing, it would seem like having a one-click program that's capible of coverting PAL to NTSC (full disk) is a very real possibility in the future! This is nice to think about for those of us (alright, alright; I mean ME) who like many B horror movies that are only availible overseas, and don't really want to buy multi-region set-top boxes and coverters to replace NTSC players that work just fine for the majority of our movie-watching.

I'd like to know if there are other benefits other than this in converting PAL 2 NTSC !!! (only to know if I'll ever use this feature)

it can go from any framerate to any framerate (within reason) without reencoding audio.
SO you can do pal2ntsc, ntsc2pal, ntsc29.97 to ntsc 23.976, etc..

Very interesting. So if my understanding is correct we could demux a PAL dvd to get get an ES 25fps .mpv + an ac3 sound, run the mpv thru dgpulldown re-mux and the sound will sync up with the NTSC video? I've done my fair share of re-encodes form PAL to NTSC and 5.1 sound has always been a pain in the butt (breaking up into 6 waves, slowing down and then re-encoding). I'm not exactly sure how this would work. Please someone elaborate.

I've done my fair share of re-encodes form PAL to NTSC and 5.1 sound has always been a pain in the butt (breaking up into 6 waves, slowing down and then re-encoding). I'm not exactly sure how this would work. Please someone elaborate. Suppose you demux the video and audio from the PAL DVD. Suppose that the running time of each is 60 minutes. Now, since we are not going to touch the audio, it stays at 60 minutes duration. We want to run the video at 29.97 fps so unless we do something the duration of the video will get shorter (because we play it faster). So we just add pulldown flags so as to duplicate just enough video fields so that the video duration remains at 60 minutes when played at 29.97 fps.
Bear in mind that pulldown works only for progressive material, so if you have interlaced source, you must deinterlace it to use this approach.

Maybe I'm missing something -- it is my understanding that you can't just demux + run through dgpulldown -- the resolution of PAL has to be resized to NTSC doesn't it? At the very least you will need to resize the video from 720x576 to 720x480.
I've tried dgpulldown and it is a fantastic piece of software. But still I had to run the video through a resize/re-encode step.

yes but this is where dvd-rb excels. All you have to do (with dgpulldown) is add a filter to dvd-rb to resize. Then, by flagging the material to change the framerate, you can complete the conversion without touching the audio

No response from JDobbs on this thread? Is this still planned now that menu encoding is complete? Or can we maybe get this option for Movie Only?

I'll eventually add a pulldown and conversion option within DVD-RB.

:thanks:
DVD-RB will be the first "1 click" PAL->NTSC DVD conversion program.
