Lately my computer has been crashing, as in shutting off while using DVD2SVCD Ver. 1.2.3 build 1. This occurs mostly or maybe or maybe only while converting interlaced movies. In other words, when it shuts down out of the blue for no apparent reason I think it happens only while converting an interlaced movie - not every interlaced movie I convert will shut down my computer. I have been using QuEnc 0.61 and smartdeinterlace setting on the conversion tab.

Has anyone else run into this and if so know of a fix ?
I use a PIII, 1000 MHZ, 512 MB Ram, and 2 80 GB Hard drives

Also, is there a way to know if a DVD movie is interlaced before doing a conversion. I have the impression that if the FrameRate is 29970, it's an interlaced movie, but the problem is that I must begin an DVD2SVCD conversion before I see that informaion displayed in the log.

IMHO interlaced sources are mostly TV based dvd's I.E collections on dvd of a series that was originally made for TV. Movies are not usually interlaced. This is all well documented on the web.

The most obvious reason for a total shutdown is overheating. The cpu etc could get hotter doing interlaced sources because the encoding process is slower because the process of de-interlacing etc is more intensive. But the normal CCE process usually hammers things pretty well anyway.

Always post the contents of your dvd2svcd.log.txt file when post issues like this.

Does your mobo give you any monitoring software to view the temperature of the system and the cpu while your encoding. If it wasn't an issue in the past and it is now, then maybe one of your fans is slowing down or packing up?

Equilibrium.

My BIOS is set to warn me (with a wickedly loud lengthy siren) when it's 15 degrees F below shutdown temp - it didn't do that. 2 or 3 weeks ago I took out the heat sink and fan. Completely cleaned out all dust as well as applied heat conductive paste between the heat sink and CPU. These are documetarys I've been backing up a lot lately. Most of them are interlaced. I know that because if I convert them without smartdeinterlace the SVCD has very jumpy video and then when I convert again with smartdeinterlace the video is fine. Back to my question. How do I know if a DVD is interlaced before I convert it to SVCD ?

If you use the preview video option within DVD2SVCD, click through a few sample frames to one where the subjects are moving. When it is interlaced you can usually see the jagged look to the picture. You see horizontal stripes in the picture, I find that the quickest way to tell. I only really bother to check if the source isn't a feature film.

Another option with the shutdown could be power, have you uprated your graphics card or cpu lately? I've had trouble here and there with old releases of D2S in the past but only crashes etc. nothing that shut the machine down, with the stability of XP these days, that only really happens if you have a hardware problem, or a driver installation that it isn't happy with, have you seen if it BSOD's before it shutsdown?

Regards
