Why does the exact same DivX file from a $70 phillips DVD player look better than being played out of my $2000 PC with a $400 ATI video card in it.

Granted the card is a few years old now but svideo is svideo?

Is their a third party video output card specializing in TV output. I'm looking for a razor sharp picture.

The TV is a high quality Toshiba CRT that is capable of High Def. The divx file is encoded at 640x480 with most settings default to home theatre.

I would be surprised if this did not happen..High quality tv and high quality card will fit better to reality.Your old player did not decode all the information and did not show it correct.I cant describe it better in english :( sorry.
I have also noticed this passing to a sony high quality tv where every problem of the video will be shown,while in my old 21inch you couldnt see everything but it seemed nice..

The difference is in sharpness. The pc version looks much softer.

To add to this post I picked up a 6800GT card with component video out and high def capability. We tried all kinds of different settings and still could not match the quality of the phillips player.

One thing we are noticing now is that the phillips player video is about an inch wider on each side of the picture even though both are set to use the native 4:3 NTSC picture. Could this be due to the phillips player using 720x480 vs the Nvdia card using 640x480? Would this cause the lack of sharpness?

TV has less rez, so pixels are less blured (in a way). This is normal. I have crap encodes that look good on TV :)

This is very simple. A TV-out chip on a graphic card will NEVER match quality in any standalone player with chips specially designed for decoding/enchancing MPEG material.

If you want a quality picture, either connect to the TV with DVI or VGA if the TV has such inputs, or get a standalone player that handles the video you're trying to play. Or a card with special MPEG decoding and outputs (don't think there's any good cards released since the now "old" Sigma X-card).
