standalone dvd recorders

can you record a movie using a standalone dvd recorder with a built in hard drive by hooking a dvd player to a standalone dvd recorder , then running that to your tv. since the standalone dvd player is able to remove all protection to play on your tv set.

Once it's exported analog you can usually pick it up and record it with anything. You will never get quality even close to ripping it direct from your dvd drive unless you have an optical port, but usually it's just S-video. And then you have to deal with another layer of recompression in the DVDR. But it works.... unless it's sony or similar that reads analog signaling to restrict recording.

it'd be good if DVD recorders had HDMI inputs, but that'd be like a big glimmering invitation for people to copy DVDs.

You still might have to deal with Macrovision protection as I'm sure that DVD recorders that let you record from analog source will have have a circuit to prevent you from creating copies this way.
