Splitting onto 2 DVDs with DVDFab

I ripped one of my dvds to my harddrive and then I used DVDFab to split onto 2 discs, but it makes dics 1 around 8GB and puts very little on disc2 (like maybe 200 mg). I assume this is happening because my burner is one of those dual layer drives. Is there any way to tell the program that I'm using 4.7gb discs? I couldn't find a setting for copying the entire movie to do that. I tried putting a disc in the drive before I started in case it checked the drive first but that didn't work.

I used the copy main movie option and I could pick 4.7 and choose a split point. Of there aren't any menus, etc. Curiously, disc 1 worked fine in 2 desktop decks that I tried it in. But disc 2 would only work in the one deck. Is there any option that I missed that would make the second disc more compatible? Or did I do something wrong? Both dvd players were panasonics and both normally play discs I burn myself. But these are some of the first I've tried using my computer to burn them.

Hi!I used the copy main movie option and I could pick 4.7 and choose a split point.If you're going to use two blanks to backup your DVD, there's no reason to limit it to "main movie only", as you have sufficient space to copy the ENTIRE original double layered DVD to the two single layered blanks...

Maybe I didn't explain the problem clearly, but...

If I choose copy entire DVD, and then click on proceed, it splits the movie as though I was going to use double layer discs (or whatever they are properly called), but I want to use single layer discs, 4.7GB. I get disc one at approx. 7.9 GB and the second disc at 200 MB. I've re-tried it several times and it always splits it that way. There were 3 other in the Program PGC, but they all had 0 times and said when I tried to select them, the program said that they weren't valid split points. Not exactly sure how the error was worded. There doesn't appear to be anyway to tell DVDFab that I am using 4.7GB discs if I copy the entire DVD. (I tried putting a blank disc in the drive before I started, hoping it would see that I was using 4.7 GB discs, but that did work either.) I only see an option to tell the program what size discs I'm using, if I choose just copy main movie.

Are you using the freeware version 0.17 of DVDFab, or something else?

Yes. I did it just like the instructions said. I have a folder on the harddrive calld DVDFab and it writes two folders call disc 1 and disc 2. It just writes too much information to the disc 1 folder because it seems to assume I'm using double layer discs. I tried IFOEdit too. I have another post on that. I think I'm following the instructions but when I burn the discs, most of them only work in the pc. Could it be something to do with Nero? I used DVD-Video and believe I chose the same settings as one of the guides for Nero said to use.

Could it be something to do with Nero?NERO certainly has nothing to do with the difficulty you're experiencing with DVDFab...It just writes too much information to the disc 1 folder because it seems to assume I'm using double layer discs.I don't think that's what's going on. It seems that DVDFab is having difficulty find an earlier proper point for a layer break.

1) What's the title and Region of your original, purchased DVD that's causing this difficulty?

2) What software did you use to rip it to your hard drive?

You're right of course. Nero has nothing to do with the problem with DVDFab spliting it into too large a file. But I think that something about how I am authoring them in Nero is why they won't work in any desktop player. I am using DVD and then DVD-Video. I think at the end it says something about writing some UDF something or other. But it never says that it is finalizing. But the disc does seem to be finalized. And the option to finalize is checked and greyed out.

Anyway, I was able to burn the split files I made with IFOEdit using Nero Recode and they work in all the players I tried them in, so I'm happy with that. Since the files were under 4 GB, I don't think there was any loss in quality. It said it was burning them at 100% and it did say at the end that it was finalizing. So there must be something different about how it is writing the files and when I do them myself.

Thanks for the suggestion, hdi20. I just learned today that there was a version I could buy. In reading some other threads, I noticed that this freeware\shareware? program was no longer being developed. I took that to mean that there must be a version for sale. I did a search on google and I found the website.

As far as my burning problem, I'm wondering if maybe my panasonic desktops (both at least a year old) aren't able to read +R/+RWs. That's what my pc burns, but I know the panasonic desktop DVD burner writes in RAM/-R/-RWs. I was thinking of getting an external sony burner that will burn in -R/-RW/+R/+RW. Maybe if I burn in the -Rs, the panasonics will be happier with them.
