View Full Version : "The Fog" cannot compress

Hey guys!

I was forced to use DVDFabDecrypter to decrypt "The Fog" and completed the rip successfully. However, once loaded into DVD Shrink I find that the movie cannot be compressed to a single layer disc. How about reauthoring?? Nope! I tried loading the movie title only and it showed still to be too large to compress to a single layer. So, my last resort was to sacrifice a couple bucks a disc and burn to a dual layer. Problem solved??
Yeah right!! The film contains a new encryption so that DDecrypter cannot perform any kind of rip from the disc.

I've never been forced to resort to burning to a dual layered disc before. So, using DDecrypter is the only method that I've known of that can be used to create an uncompressed ISO.

???Are there any other methods or possible programs that could be used to create an uncompressed ISO???

Thank You friends!!!

Run it through FixVTS (www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS) - or even better decrypt with the PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html) plugin.

How to backup ARccOS DVDs (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56831).

setarip_old / blutach --

I don't believe it's Rip Guard protected. I believe it must be ARccOS. Therefore, I'm unable to use DDecrypter to create an uncompressed ISO.

Are you saying I should get a plugin for DDecrypter to be able to complete the "ISO Read" and then burn???

Better yet, is there a way that I can use DVDFab to decrypt and then somehow convert the file format to an ISO???

*thanks for the responses guys*

Very Strange guys. I ripped it to my HDD using Shrink, and AnyDVD, without a single problem. The one I had to work on was Flightplan.

The one sure way (100% guaranteed) to see if it's protected or not, is to open PgcEdit (http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/index.html), cancel the wizard if it comes up and from the menu:

Plugins - PSL2 - Advanced Mode - Find Protected Titles

If none show, then just use DVD Decrypter.

"The Fog" is by Sony Pictures. It's ARccOS protected. I first tried DVDShrink, and ran into the same problem, I couldn't process. I then used DVDFab, and the file was too large to process through DVDShrink. A simple run through VobBlanker fixed it, and afterwards, Shrink processed to an .iso, and then I put it on disc. By the way, setarip_old's post on "Distingushing Ripguard from ARccOS" is very informative on this subject, and they are two different types of protection. "Flightplan" however is RipGuard, and the new DVDFab took it with no problems. ARccOS seems to be the one that is ever changing.

@VWRacer
Just wondering, what region code are you in? And you said that you ripped it to your HD. Were you able to put the file back on a Disc, or was it to large to fit on a 4.7gig disc?

Greentech, I'm in region 1, and yes, the burn did fit on 4.7gb disc. I did remove all the unnecessary languages, and subtitles I wasn't going to use, and got it to 64% auto compress. I thought it was strange myself when I didn't run into any messages telling me there was a problem with the rip. I am running the latest update on AnyDVD, as of Monday. There is an entry in the CSS keys for The Fog, and perhaps that was enough. I had anticipated needing to use DVDFab, and Vob Blanker, but didn't need to. Go figure......

You know it never even crossed my mind that it may be due to a new form of ARccOS so I never thought to process it through VobBlanker. If you say that that's what the case may be and running it through VobBlanker solved the problem then it has to be the solution to my problem.
It's just odd. Usually when the disc contains ARccOS it won't even load into DVD Shrink and that's when I know I need to process it with VobBlanker beforehand. In this case, it loaded into Shrink just fine after decrypting to my HD and it showed that I just couldn't compress it and get it to fit on a single layered disc - not even after reauthoring with the Main Movie only
I'll try to run it through VobBlanker and I'm sure that will cure the ailment.

**Thank You all for the posts!!!**

The lates DVDFab Decrypter will do something like VobBlanker and FixVTS, so that DVD Shrink can accept it.

Welp, guess what?

It didn't work running it through VobBlanker. DVD Shrink still shows the movie to be too large to fit on a 4.7 Gb disc.

I don't have a problem decrypting nor loading the movie into DVD Shrink. It's once I get it into DVD Shrink that it shows the film to be too large. Even if I reauthor, the main movie alone is too large.

I will start from scratch with the latest version of DVDFab and go from there.

@hous
What decrypter did you use? I used the latest version of DVDFab. Then process the new file through VobBlanker, then open that file with DVDShrink. I name the files DVDFab, DVDVOB. That way you won't get confused as to what stage they are at. And on a final note, ensure that you have selected only the languages needed under preferences, stream selection of shrink.

And as to the ARccOS keeping th file from opening, this will happen sometimes. You will only find the error after shrink has processed a portion of the disc. Its usually a hidden part of the file that shrink doesn't always see. There are numerous ways to see if the disc contains ARccOS. You can find these by researching through some of the threads on DOOM9. Chances are however, if it is a newer SonyPictures disc, its going to contain ARccOS. If I see the case, and its says Sony, I go straight for DVDFab.

I'm using the latest version of DVDFab (express). I always rename the files with a 1 and 2 or something so that I can distinguish. I noticed that I had the old version of DVDFab and I updated that and no change in the outcome.

thanks!

Did you process the file from the updated DVDFab through VobBlanker before DVDShrink?

I'm using the latest version of DVDFab (express). You should be using the latest version of DVDFab Decrypter (not Express)

You have some other problem besides copyguard issues. If you can't fit , even a reauthored , movie only on one disc, there is something wrong.
Everyone has given you the normal course of ripping this type of disc, and you can't seem to do it. Look for something else. Perhaos the disc itself is defective, I don't know. I've only had one disc I couldn't compress enough, to fit on one disc.
Try mounting your ISO rip in Daemon tools, and then run Shrink. Alternately, uninstall Shrink, and reinstall. Do the same with DVD Fab. Sometimes the program itself gets corrupted. What have you got to loose?

Let us know how it's going,

Well, I reinstalled DVDFab (Express) and also Shrink and started from scratch. I also processed it through VobBlanker before Shrink each attempt. I'm still getting the same outcome.

My next step is to try a different copy of the film. It doesn't seem likely that that's the problem, but you never know.

If all else fails then I may take the advise and purchase DVDFab Decrypter (not express).
Something else that crossed my mind was that when you load a folder into DVD Shrink once, it remembers the folder and doesn't have to analyse again. I figured that it must put some kind of a stamp or label into a memory bank that tells it that it has been analysed before. I wondered if there was any kind of truth to it or not cause I am just speculating. If so, then Shrink may not be receiving the file correctly if it thinks that it's the same file with no alteration to it.

Man!! did I just type that?? Geeze it's late!!
Anyway, feel free to let me know if there's any truth to that or if I'm an idiot. It's ok, I can take it.

thanks guys

I just extracted The Fog last night using DVDFab Decryptor and it worked fine. My recent experiences with DVD Decryptor with AnyDVD resulted in a series of strange fault mesages about a header problem that ended up causing DVD Decryptor to choke on the disc, which is what prompted me to use DVDFabDecryptor instead. I then stripped out the main movie using DVDFab and was able to get it to fit on a single disc. I burned it to DVD-RW but haven't had a chance to check it yet. I also ripped and processed FlightPlan with the same results. I'll check them this afternoon to see if they play back OK.

One thing I've noticed on certain rips is that although they may process fine, the burned copies get hung up on playback in my DVD player. They'll load but won't start playing. I find that if I skip ahead to the next chapter I can rewind all the way back to within a few seconds of the beginning of the disc and then let it start playing. From there on it plays back fine. This could be due to the -RW media I'm using or some issue with the copyguard protection on the disc but I can't say for sure. I've had this occur on several discs.

I would think that this is your choice of media. As soon as I buy the movie, I rip them automatically, store the origionals away in a book, and only keep the rips in the cases. In fact, on both these movies, I have only watched my ripped versions. (learned my lesson with four kids destroying my origionals) They both worked fine.
As far as Shrink keeping a "memory file", just change the file that you are procesing into. Add a number to it or something. I don't think that is your problem though. As setarip suggested, get DVDFab Decrypter (Its Free), and give it a run. DVDFab (Express) isn't the way I went, and I have a beautiful, working copy.

I was having the same problem with The Fog not compressing with shrink. It would only compress to 99% I then tried to hit the Anaylisis button at the top and shrink started to re analyse the movie, but this time it took a long time to analyse. After shrink was finished anaylising, the movie compressed with no problems so far....i am in the process of shrinking and burning at this time. I used the latest DVD Fab, ran through vob blanker, then through shrink and hit the analysis button to get it to compress properly.

Ok, well, DVDFab Decrypter is a shortened version of DVDFab Decrypter Express. So yeah, I have been using the same version that your refering to.
It's just that it says 'Express' on the program window. My mistake.

If DVD Shrink's deep analysis works in anabling it to shrink, then FixVTS (www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS) will work too. Just drag and drop onto it, tick both boxes and click full DVD. Quicker than waiting 20 minutes for a DVD Shrink DA.

I used DVD Decrypter to rip The Fog. I did not get any errors from DVD Decrypter but it showed it skipped two files. Using PgcEdit with plug in wizard, it stated there was no ARCSS protected files. I then ran the ripped files through Vobblanker (don't know if I needed Vobblanker or not because I had not tried to run it through DVD Shrink yet but I did it anyway) and DVD Shrink accepted them fine and the movie only fit on the single layer DVD with room to spare. Dunno what your problem is regarding that "too big" thing. I've never seen ANY DVD movie where DVD Shrink could not make the movie only fit on a single layer disk, including some long ones like The Green Mile and Alexander (both around 2 1/2 hours each).

setarip_old

@Mike89

What you've just described (Needing ONLY DVD Decrypter and VOBBlanker)would appear to indicate that "The Fog" contained "RipGuard" (not "ARccOS") copy protection. To better understand why I say this, see my initial post to the thread at:

"Dunno what your problem is regarding that "too big" thing" This seems to be due to DVDFab processing. I have seen it a couple of times, but VobBlanker fixes the problem. The movie first will not open in Shrink, DVDFab will process, and when you try Shrink again, it says its too big, no matter what you remove. However, if you run it through VobBlanker at this time, then reopen with Shrink, everything will fit. Weird, I know, but it works. I did not try the DVDD. I got it to work this way.
@setarip
The fog is by Sony Pictures. Are they using ARccOS as well as RipGuard?
I also noticed that Mike89 said that DVDD skipped 2 files. So apparently, unless he has viewed these discs, he does not have a full working copy? And for another example of the same problem, try Sony's "The Gospel". "Flightplan", "Underclassman" which was RipGuard, did not have this problem. DVDFab processed, and Shrink opened the files up and ran fine.
Sony Pictures, or "ARccOS" protection seems to be the demon child, which requires further processing after the decryption. The RipGuard'ed discs process fine through Shrink after Decrypting through the newer versions of the decryption software. (DVDFab, PGCEdit+DVDD)

I do have a working copy, I watched it. The two missing files shown by DVD Decrypter was before I ran those ripped files through Vobblanker. Maybe Vobblanker put them back in? I did do "movie only".

I don't think The Fog has any Arrcos protected files because DVD Decrypter did not generate any error messages during the rip and PgcEdit (with plugin) said it didn't. Just because the movie is Sony does not necessarily mean it has Arrcos. Some do, some don't.

setarip_old

@greentech1974I also noticed that Mike89 said that DVDD skipped 2 files.Perhaps I misinterpreted the statement by "Mike89" as meaning "DVD Decrypter replaced two areas with blank sectors" (because he/she also said, "I did not get any errors from DVD Decrypter" and "Using PgcEdit with plug in wizard, it stated there was no ARCSS protected files").

On the other hand, perhaps "Mike89" ripped the 2002 release of the original (1980) Adrienne Barbeau version of "The Fog" ;>}

I had the same compression (or lack of) problem using the Wizard on PGCEdit. Shrink would not let the movie size drop below 4.8GB or so - even when reauthoring as "film only". I saved the PSL generated by the wizard, reripped the film manually with that PSL, processed w/VOBBlanker, and it compressed fine. For some reason, using PCGEdit in the process was what caused the compression issues in Shrink.

So I found a way around the problem; but does anyone know why this problem occurred when using PGCEdit?

NOTE: Yes, I made sure all of my plugins and versions were current before posting this.

I successfully burned a backup of this movie using the method described above, DVDFab Decrypter - VOBBlanker - DVDShrink. I did run into the exact same problem as Hous, even using this method, but when DVDShrink gave me the message that the file was too big, process anyway I clicked yes and low and behold it backed up a perfect 4.35GB copy anyway. Plays perfectly. Maybe I need to update my DVDFab Decrypter or VOBblanker but simply clicking yes anyway burned a perfect copy, so if you're still running itno that just override it it will work even though Shrink warns that the file might be too big.

I was just wondering if you did a full disc back-up or if you re-authored with the main title only??? Does the full disc fit without any problems or do I need to re-author in order to get a good copy???

thanks!!
