I have a sony player that is about a year old - it never has problems playing burned single layer discs but has trouble reading burned dl discs properly -
any suggestions for a player that will play dl discs?... :(

Hi!

My SONY DVP-NS725P plays my burned Verbatim D/L DVD+ media perfectly, from beginning to end.

Have you tried playing your burned DL DVDs on any other standalone players - to determine if it's actually the player or the burned DVD that's the cause of your difficulty?

What brand and model burner are you using?

What format (+ or -), brand, and Manufacturer's ID of DL media are you using?

they are ridata +r discs - burned at 2.4x and i used the bitsetting tool to change them to dvd - rom -
the player is an ns425p so it is probably older - or cheaper- than yours -
from some postings i've found my model is known not to play dl discs :(
think i need a better player - sony's own site lists what will /wont play dl

Again, I would ask:

I'd strongly suggest you try Verbatim DL DVD+Rs instead of the Ridata media. MANY postings at this and other forums indicate that, presently, Verbatim DL media appears to be the only consistently reliable DL media...

That could be very useful info. Possibly it should be added to the DVD Burning FAQ?

I have been using 2 different Phillips players to play back my Ridata DL discs without a problem for about 2 months now. Not a hitch! Toshiba and Samsung players would not play them reliably.

I recently purchased a pack of 50 Ridata 4.7 GB DVD-R disks, single layer, and at least every other one, if not more, are of dubious quality. A few will burn at 16x most will burn only at 8x even with latest firmware for my burner. TDK and Verbatim by contrast burn at high speeds consistently with no worries.

I seriously considered it might be a hardware compatibility issue, but after researching the matter it appears Ridata quality control isn’t all it could be with most testers rating the media using terms like "questionable, unreliable, inconsistent". From what I understand the coating on these disks isn’t evenly applied; Ridata is Ritek's "bargain" brand.

This isn’t to say there may still not be compatibility concerns regarding your player, but I would certainly stay away from Ridata, and it is likely best to stay away from Ritek as well. There is a list of media that have been consistently reliable somewhere in the forum, one of the "stickys". Verbatim is one, and I believe TDK is listed as well.

DVD-R DL generally has poor compatibility with standalones.
as for +R DL, try booktyping to -ROM.
