View Full Version : What Options Does ESS Compatibility Set?

I'm trying to encode some Xvids for my DVP642 player. I'm having an absolutely perplexing problem where I get frames flickering after some scene changes, seemingly randomly. I can only guess that there is something set wrong in Xvid for the player. But, I'm using the NTSC HT profile (Xvid 1.1). Nothing is changed from this default other than VHQ for Bframes and with the 2nd pass I use all 10's for the Overflow treatment (to prevent oversize I see sometimes).
I have used AutoGK in the past and it made perfect encodings for the player. What settings does it use with the ESS compatibility mode?

It uses the Home Theatre profiles as far as I know. Probably it limits bframes to 1 though.

Well my prob's not caused with BVOPs at 2. Tested that. Nor VHQ for bframes. Uhhg this is so insanely frustrating. I'm going to test filters next. Maybe TIVTC is doing something DVP642 doesnt like.
These files appear totally flawless on my PC. My filter setup in Staxrip is both faster, smoother (hybrid IVTC), and better quality overall than AutoGK, but I can't figure this BS out. On the DVP642 when a scene changes camera angle, sometimes a half image flashes on half of the screen (like a frame from the previous angle). It's the strangest thing and horribly annoying.
It's not caused by VOB file corruption (tried two drives). Tried 2 different computers. Tried different Xvid versions. Newer versions of the filters I'm using. Ahhhg!

...Maybe TIVTC is doing something DVP642 doesnt like.I have Pinnacle/SigmaDesigns media players have have had similar frustrations to yours (I use the MTK/Sigma setting). The worst conversions I have experienced are when the program (usually TV captures) are deemed to be "mostly Hybrid" and Telecide's Decimate argument kicks-in. Always looks horrible.
I would suggest that you try Fairuse Wizard and manually set the codec settings. I've had very good luck with it. The downside though is that it only works with DVDs or DVD ISO files, so I can't use it with my TV captures.

Ok I'm almost positive it is Xvid causing the problem. I tried an encode with Divx, using the same setup otherwise, and it worked perfectly. I can't imagine what setting is wrong in Xvid.... I've tried practically everything in there..

I'm also facing similar kind of problem with my DVP 642 as mentioned by swaaye for my xvid video.
Tried changing the fccHandler and bicompression thru AVI4cc changer - Doesn't help.
Is there any way to change it thru MPEG4 Modifier or with the any other tools.
Thanks in advance
