This post is only semi-serious but I just had to ask because of this:

My wife got Back To The Future, trilogy box set, from the local library, but it's in full-screen. My kids watched 1 and 2, I think, then we took it back as I've requested the WS version. My son, who just turned 7, asked "Dad, can you make the fullscreen into widescreen ??". Yeah, he's 7.... :D When he asked, I recalled seeing that option in the advanced settings of DVD-RB and said, "yeah, I might be able to". It's too late now, of course, but it's something to remember in the future.

This function is really an AVISynth thing though, is it not ?? I assume it just crops the picture and reformats it too, right ?? What's the opinion of the quality ??

its in the 'avs expert options' section of the Options tab. and yes.. it uses avisynth scripting to crop and resize. (of course dvdrb also updates settings in the resulting dvd to corrected reflect 16:9 info like ifo AR setting and wide/lb setting for subs, etc)

be careful because your post seems to imply that you would be copying the disk you loaned out. if not i apologize but this cannot be condoned, even if it may be ok in your country (dunno which one your from) to do so. thank you
