Rules violations - Members or ONLY Moderators?

Is it appropriate at the Doom9 forums for members to post their belief/suspicion that a thread is in violation of the rules - or should members be limited to reporting their beliefs/suspicions to the moderators?

(In my opinion, we members should be limited to reporting to the moderators, so as to avoid any animosity amongst members resulting from members' attempts to act like "policemen" - especially if a posting is subject to interpretation, as many are...)

It's a bit like being a vigilante. You can report it to a moderator if you feel that the evidence there is sufficiently viable to be in violation of a certain rule, or rules. I think it unlikely you'll get sanctioned for it. You are after all helping them. Since when did helping somebody with something warrant being sanctioned?

setarip_old I agree with you. People should use the report button if they think some rule is broken. Members attempts to act like policemen is one thing, but sometimes it also limits the moderator in his posssible actions he/she can take. This is all imo. I will ask what other mods think about this.

is it trying to act as policemen though or trying to infact help someone fix a problem with their post before a mod needs to get involved ?

hmm has there been much animosity that you have seen ? i know of 1 thread where the poster got uppity over being told he was breaking a rule, rule 12 "whats best" to be exact. yes he tried to say because he said more in the post then the rule didnt apply, along with some smartarse remarks. the result was neuron2 stepped in and said he was wrong. infact where is that poster now and what was his history on this forum again ? if you know who i mean you will know he what he was like and why he can not be taken as an average member.

as for interpretation, i think rule 12, for example, is pretty straight forward. if someone uses "whats best" in a post when they could have asked "whats the differences" or something similar how is that up to interpretation ? yes i have seen people try to justify it by claiming they were not REALLY asking whats best but if you look back through neuron2's recent posts you will see exactly how much validity that gets. sometimes the breaking of other rules is also pretty clear aswell.

of course if there is any real doubt then yes probably reporting to a mod is a good idea.

To a certain point I think Wilbert is right, if this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=769406#post769406) were reported properly, then action could have been taken.

But on the other hand such post's as "what's the best <insert topic here>" tend to be written by newbies who have not familiarized themselves with the rules enough to know what their posting is against the rules. In these cases I think members should get involved and remind them so they aren't striked by the mods.

Actually, I was thinking more of Rule #6 than Rule #12 when I started this thread.

You're certainly correct that there's little room for misinterpretation of a thread heading that includes "What's the best" in it...

I personally appreciate any help members want to give in educating others about the rules and culture here. If done in the right spirit, how can it be wrong?

thats why i also said if there was any doubt then indeed PM'ing a mod would probably be a good idea. some of those can be a bit iffy.

yes, rules 8 and 9 are pretty straight forward aswell. any experienced member should be able to spot them and suggest the poster may want to fix them.
