I would like to back up my DVDs for fullscreen display on my HDTV (NTSC 16x9) without any letter boxing. Up until now I have been viewing DVDs with a computer and software player to scale the picture for full screen viewing while maintaining the correct aspect ratio. I would like to backup my DVDs in either Divx or Mpeg-4 format for playback with my dvd (Philips DVP642) player. I guess my question is this, can this be done? Can my Divx or Mpeg-4 backups be played on my the dvd player (Divx Home Theater certified dvd player)? Cropping and resizing is ok as this is aready done by my software player. If it is possible what resolutions should I use for the encoder. I will adjust the bitrate accordingly (would like to fit 2 full length movies to a dvd5). There is a related question and this one concerns the tv. The TV aspect ratio is 16:9 but the native resolution on the tv is 1024 by 768 (42 inch plasma) which works out mathmatically to 4:3 the same a a SDTV. Guess the tv's pixels are not rectangular.:stupid: , but HD programs playback well and are not distorted. Not sure if this is related to the resolutions to which I should encode.

as far as I know, the Philips 642 does not display 16:9 ratio mpeg4 in the correct aspect ratio (they will look like it is approximately 2.35:1), and it will also look stretched. You will need a different mpeg4 player :)

I haven't experienced any aspect ratio problems on two different 642 sets...
