Recode or H264 for backup?

Hey

Recode 2 is giving me 76% video quality if I remove the menus and all unnecessary audio and bonus material . The movie is Serenity:)

Do you think I would be better off using Recode 2 or H264 if I wanted to backup this movie to a DVD5? If I were to H264 I'd do a 2CD with all the goodies :D I'd like to retain as much quality as possible! Aside from zero existing players for H264 it may soon become a popular backup option;)

well recode uses h264. if you meant x.264 then it won the codec comparrission in both quality in speed and would be a better option.

If you trust your eyes, try both and use what you think is best.
If you trust your wallet go for x264.

Personally i would purely go for x264, if there is something i dont like, report it, so the developers can work on it.... man opensource rocks!

i don't get the point of the question? are you asking what will give better quality?

if you are transcoding dvd material @ 76% video compression then it is gonna look pretty much like the source dvd...

the quality of the 76% transcode is gonna look better than two 700 meg x264 encoded files...

it depends on what you want...do you wanna dvd backup for a standalone or do you want avc files for playback on your computer or possibly a future standalone?

i pretty much think using cd's for movie backups is dead...dvd media is getting cheap enough...backup @ 1/3 of a dvd+/-r (1493mb) and fit 3 movies on one dvd...

using 1493mb using nero digital avc or x264 the quality is pretty damn good, almost dvd quality for movies ~2 hours or slightly longer...movies approaching 3 hours i just encode to 2048mb and put two on one dvd...(like saving private ryan).

to get great results you have to use the highest quality settings and that takes forever to encode, so it's up to you what you want to accomplish.

The movie will be stored on a DVD I didn't mean to say 2CD, just easier to give a quality comparison of a 2CD x264 then 1.4GB. I'm just backing up for computer viewing

Edit* I just saw the Nero Digital option (AVC) sorry I thought the first option was that, now I see all the profiles people are talking about. I posted a more appropriate question in another forum :)
