PC Not seeing Entire Mpeg-2 File??

For some reason, some of my mpeg-2 files are not being read correctly.

Any ideas on why this machine would think a 3 minute mpeg-2 file is only 6 seconds? The only program that reads it correctly is my dvd software, but I need to edit the video for broadcast.

I checked the files on another machine and they work, so the problem is not the file. The problem must be related to my machine and reading the files.

2) When you created this file, did you use this same machine?

What program are you using to edit the videos with? If your looking at the video with VideoLan it might give you incorrect time, try Media Player Classic if you want a free Mpeg2 Viewer. I've had better luck with it.

Also try and open the video in virtualdub mod and see if there are any errors when using your box.

IMHO there may not be a rule 6 violation.

he says he's editing for broadcast. it's very likely he's been supplied with m2v's by external (or internal...) clients and they're in a weird format.

i send m2v's to people all the time, and i wouldn't consider them pirates if something i did wrong caused them to post here :)

so:

the problem may be a sequence end-code in the middle of the mpeg streams. download a (free of course) app called "ReStream", and check "remove sequence end-codes".

okay, this is getting unproductive, but anyway:

- he mentions that he did not create the files in question. i think that is true of almost everything here (except in the DV forum) and is hardly proof of downloading files (in fact, the word "download" does not appear in this or the other thread).

- he says he ripped the files from several different DVDs. no mention was made of where they came from, and though we must be cautious and avoid unwanted attention, it is not our place to assume that these DVDs were stolen or pirated. again, almost everything here relates to ripped DVDs and is phrased in a similar way to snapware's posts.

- snapware says he's editing for broadcast. he might just be telling the truth, and believe me, broadcasters are far more cautious than this forum when it comes to properly obtaining material. it doesn't sound like he's just making an AMV or anything. we must not automatically assume that snapware is lying, as that would reflect as badly on this forum as any random noob post would IMHO.

i might be wrong, but to me it seems snapware is being treated unfairly, as from what i've seen he's in no way behaved contrary to the spirit of this forum, or even broken any rules (except having the nerve to post again when his last post was closed with no actual help given. if that'd been me i'd have been severely annoyed, as i do similar things all the time legally and do not wish to be treated like a n00b or a criminal).

not really cross-posting, but it could seem somewhat related; since no actually to prove of rules broken, i'm going to help (grey area)

i get the same problem for *.m1v, *.mpg, wmp keeps a record of all media files played within itself (name, location, and length)

to explain this as simple as possible, i'm going to uses my pc as a example

O:\01.mpg (Fushigi Yugi Eikoden) 26:41

O:\01.mpg (Excel Saga) 26.41

O:\01a.mpg (Excel Saga) 22.02

O:\Excel Saga\01.mpg 22.02

so either rename or move the file to correct the flaw

Mug--That's because the link jggimi posted doesn't tell the whole tale, let me see if I can unravel this a bit, it's become quite a cluster, ahem...

Snapware posted a flurry of threads that all seemed to be intertwined. In this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=105940), he named his source as material that had been "sent" to him, prompting me to close that thread, and subsequently the other threads he'd posted. Instead of contacting me, another Mod, or opening a new thread to clarify his position, he cross-posted in a diffferent sub-fora; this one. Check the timestamps, this thread was opened after the closings in Newbies.

If you guys had been aware of the totality of the activity in Noobs, instead of what appeared to be one isolated instance, you might not have helped Snapware, but this is most certainly a cross-post of a conglomeration of issues that I ascertained were connected.

setarip--You were subscribed to the thread I linked to and were responsible for elicting Snapware to make the comments for which I ultimately closed the thread. As far as the "official" status of the Announcement in the Newbies forum, maybe it's time for you to open a thread in General, or contact Doom9 for a ruling. I seriously doubt that he's ignorant of its existence, or that it was posted minus his approval.

I made the call/s in the Newbies Forum, and I stand by them. Opening a new thread in another sub-fora was the wrong move, IMO. Additionally, Snapware didn't do himself any favors by choosing a nick that also identifies a popular P2P filesharing software. He might have taken the name from the plasticware that he carries his lunch to work in, but it was a poor choice, again, IMO.

cool. i didn't want to question your authority or anything. without doing a background search for "snapware" it looked like threads were being closed inexplicably (i didn't even know there was a p2p prog called "snapware" to be honest... i don't really follow that scene closely). i was just thinking what would happen if i had the same problem... true enough i'd elaborate on the source, like "one of the designers here has sent me some mpegs and they appear to only show the first minute" or whatever. it's a fairly common occurence, but i usually solve these problems by either figuring it out or asking for a replacement sample. either that or it's me that's supplied someone else with a bork stream.

i just did a quick google aswell and only came up with storage containers aswell. must not be very popular i guess. :)

anyway getting back to the original question, since it may be of interest to others.

correct. its infact the mpeg2 decoding codec thats got the problem. i came across this quite some time ago, no i wont go looking for it in the long ago threads.
basically some codecs simply do not recognise .m2v correctly, muxxing with audio fixes some but not all, so even mpg can still be reported wrong. going from memory moonlight, for example, you could set to use frame count or pts and if set frame count it was way wrong. while if set to pts it was nearly right(something like half or 1 second short reported of real length).
