I was reading about the GeCube Radeon X1600XT graphics card in Micro Mart and it says

" Using a beta encoding application provided by ATI, I was able to encode raw MPEG-2 into Divx at a speed that was at least 300% faster than the best pure CPU encoding I have ever seen. Being so fast I was willing to accept some quality loss, but the encoding was of a very high standard, "

Has anyone got anyone got any info on this card and the software ?

i especially would also like to know if this "ati accelerated divx encoder" is the divx6 encoder or an own one, just carrying the divx name?

If so I think it's been fairly well reported that it actually runs on the CPU and it's faster because the quality is lesser.

Suggestion: Download DivX 6.1.1 and try transcoding MPEG-2 to DivX using DGMPGDec, AVISynth, VirtualDub on Fast Recompress mode, and DivX set to "High Performance" mode. Maybe substitute the typical lanczos resize for bilinear. On a recent CPU in this configuration you will probably see DivX do 100fps average or more.

Unless the ATI app is a DivX Certfied encoder don't expect the bitstreams to strictly conform to those required by DivX DVD players etc. either - who knows if the data rate is managed.

atis tool explicitely talks about "divx". as i assume that divxnetworks owns the right on the name divx i am wondering why ati uses the name in their tool?

AFAIK ATI doesn't want to compete with DivX, Nero or M$ with their technology. Instead they are heavily working togehther to implement their Avivo-technology... at least you can read it, e.g. in the current issue by a german pc magazine (CHIP)
