Hi,

How can I get rid of the black side bars? I have tried to set treshold to 0 and Force cropping of to 10 from every side, but nothing happens.. How can I crop video from every side in AutoGK?

Hi-

Are you sure it's not your player adding back the black bars? Please open the finished AVI in VDubMod. If you don't see any black bars, then they're not on the AVI, but were added by your player. You can change the player settings to remove them.

Next, are you sure these black side bars are throughout the entire movie? Sometimes the amount of black varies depending on which part of the movie you're in. For example, quite a few classic films on DVD will have extra black during the opening credits, but little or none for the rest of the movie.

hi,

I don't think it's the player.. Especially during the classic films on both sides and whatever I did I could not make AutoGK to remove them manually. How should I set it in order to cut for example 10px from all four sides?
Here is a jpg thougk it looks worse in player - the black bars are sometimes as big as the mouse arrow. But in other movies it looks perfectly fine

Hi-

Yes, if it looks like that throughout the entire movie, then it looks like it left behind some of the black. There are several things you can do. I'm quoting from the tutorial that comes with your AutoGK, and is also found here:

http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=TutorialEN#6
Sometimes auto crop used with default parameters by AutoGK cannot totally remove black bars or removes too much of a movie material. In this case "Tune auto crop parameters" is very handy. Threshold defines how sensitive auto crop will be: the higher the value the more cropping will be done. To completely disable audio crop you can set threshold to 0. "Number of frames to examine" is useful parameter to change if movie is a mixture of full screen/wide screen shots, so by selecting different frames that auto crop examines you can improve cropping process. "Starting frame" can help auto crop in situation when you have a full screen logo as a part of widescreen movie, in which case autocrop might decide that the whole source is full screen. By selecting a different starting frames you force auto crop not to examine irrelevant starting movie sequence. "Force cropping" option allows you to crop additional pixels after autocrop operation (if you find that you need to always crop several more pixels you can use this option). If you disable autocrop with threshold 0 then "force cropping" option becomes fully manual crop. Remember always to check how movie looks like after you set new auto crop parameters using Preview function of AutoGK.

I'd suggest first going into the Hidden Options (Ctrl-F9), and increasing the threshold and the number of frames being examined. If that doesn't do it, then you can manually crop some more. Before doing the encoding, check it in the Preview to make sure it's OK.

Hi,

@pe3k
You can try a treshold of 69 (instead of 34) works fine for me but not 100%, if not working follow Manono instructions.
Also preview is actualised when changing settings so you can re-use it until result fits you :)

@Manono,
I may try to PM you in day(s) to come for infos.

It may help you to know that the crop is only effective in multiples of 16 - I've never used it, so I don't know exactly what happens if you set it off, whether it "rounds off" to the nearest 16, or simply discards your setting. Try it with a setting of 16 at each side.

the problem is no matter what I set in Hidden options-Force cropping of - nothing happens. It just does not work for me. It does not crop anything... Here are the samples with actual settings..

Exception post.

@pe3k
Try:
1/ open hidden options
2/ check tune auto-crop
3/ set threshold to 0
4/ set 16 (pixels) in the force cropping left box
5/ check ok etc...

I was gonna say, don't you have to check the "Tune autocrop parameters" box even if you're forcing crop? :)

A quick side note: use www.imageshack.us to upload images and provide a link here for photos (preferably their thumbnails) so there is no need to wait for moderator approval.

hm... that was the problem :))) I thought if I check the AutoCrop box it will do 'auto' and I did want to do it 'manually' so it works perfectly but it was ME who was dumb.. sorry for bothering... :((

Hehe, I learned something too. I think you're to be commended for a couple of reasons:

1. I remember making a boneheaded mistake on another site once, and I was so embarrassed that I never went back to acknowledge my error. Good for you!

2. Your experience might help someone else that has the same problem and a search turns up your thread.

Way to go, BigDid!
