low audio volume

I am getting very low audio in several recent downloaded avi files.
They are dvd screeners,
Avicodec is saying the audio is 6 channel AC-3 48k, 448kbs.
I have burned one of the samples and my dvd player also has very low audio.
Is there a procedure for normalizing the audio ?
Am I missing some new codec ?
Can someone please shed some light here ?
