Capturing real widescreen

I got a new DV camera (Canon MV800i (http://www.canon.com.au/products/cameras/cameras_video/mv800i.html)), it can film in real widescreen which isn't bad considering it is only a cheap one. The problem is that I cannot capture to the computer without the result being squshed or clipped. I use premier pro but I'm willing to use another program to capture if needed. The canon website says to use some software bundled with *some* cameras but mine did not get this software.

Provided that there's nothing special with the widescreen support in your DV camcorder, then the video resolution remains 720x576 for PAL or 720x480 for NTSC, respectively. "Real widescreen" probably means that you get 16:9 anamorphic video, which looks squashed horizontally if viewed 1:1 ("coneheads").

Set your player to display 16:9 video, so that the video gets stretched horizontally. That's the same thing a DVD player does when displaying 16:9 anamorphic video. If you encode the DV to DVD compliant MPEG-2, a 16:9 flag will (should!) be set, so that the player knows the video is 16:9 anamorphic. The MPEG-2 video should show up correctly on your standalone and in software DVD players.

I guess there's nothing wrong with your capture process.

Thanks, yea it works once I burn to DVD. It's always something simple.
