Problem with mp4 playback on Lite-on 1101

My wife bought me a Lite-on 1101 dvd player/recorder. It says it will play mp4 files. It's probably something simple but I can't get it to work. I downloaded Bond's test cd, but The player just says data cd and won't display anything. Is there a certain extention or container that is needed. I will mainly use the player for t.v. recording or dvd watching so it is not vital that it play mp4, but it would be nice to experiment. Thanks for any advise. I should mention I have searched the forum and googled around, but haven't found an answer.

mp4 files have the .mp4 extension

manufacturers often wrongly talk about "mp4" meaning mpeg-4 asp video (xvid, divx) and not .mp4

Thanks for the information and the quick reply. I will see if I can find some xvid and divx samples and try them.
