Would someone please explain what the "TMPG Procedures" guide http://www.doom9.org/mpg/tmpg_procedures.htm is trying to say in the section under "Demultiplexing". For example, the first sentence is: A very annoying "feature" of TMPEGEnc is that the files it produces cannot be multiplexed correctly, so we have to demultiplex it.
I don't understand this sentence on several levels. Does it really mean that the files TMPEGEnc produces can never be multiplexed? Not by any program? What is the "it" that must be demultiplexed, then? It would seem that "it" means "the files produced by TMPEGEnc", but "files" is plural and "it" is singular, so maybe not. And if the problem is that that "the files" can't be multiplexed correctly, that implies that they are separate audio and video files, so how could we demultiplex them? But if the "it" that is to be demultiplexed isn't (one of?) the files produced by TMPEGEnc, where did it come from, then?
Also, if the "it" (whatever that is) is something that has already been multiplexed, why would we even want to use TMPEGEnc to demultiplex it, knowing that TMPEGEnc creates files that can't be multiplexed correctly? What good could those files be if they can't be put back together? And if "it" is already multiplexed, why isn't that OK, and why would we worry if "it" can't be multiplexed (a second time?) correctly or not?
An alternative idea is that there really isn't anything wrong with the separate video and audio files that TMPEGEnc produces, despite what the sentence above says, but that TMPEGEnc can't mulitplex them (or any other files either, perhaps?) correctly, so you have to use some other (unspecified) program to do any multiplexing. Is that what the sentence is supposed to mean? And if so, does that "feature" include what appears (at first glance) to be a separate tool under the "tools" menu as well whatever multiplexes the results of the video and audio encoders? (That could easily be the same logic, but not necessarily so, as far as I can tell.)
In last sentence, I think the verb tenses are vague/confused. It says: Once done, your MPEG file should be splitted to a video file and a audio file. I think that it is supposed to mean that as a result of the demultiplexing, the file is split into a video file and an audio file (which would be the whole point of demultiplexing, after all), but that's not what the sentence says, so maybe that's not what it is supposed to mean. It appears to be saying that once you demultplex, then you must split the files, but that can't be right, can it? So is my assumption correct?
I would appreciate it if someone would try to explain this section of the guide. I'm sure there is a logical explanation, but it escapes me. Thinking about that first sentence in particular makes my head spin! :confused:
