ever-changing dvd copy protection

so, i run a version of powerdvd se which was released probably 4 years ago. it still works great on every dvd title on any computer.

now can someone tell me why this old prog is not stumped by any perverted dvd copy protection scheme yet every time i want to dump a new movie onto my hdd, i must download a new version of anydvd or else get errors.

i mean could we not just 'steal' the mpeg stream while playing w/ a software player or better yet, code a decrypter that is as good as cyberlink's!

ARccOS protection is specifically designed to allow a player to function without interference, whether it's a software or hardware player. It only "kicks in" if the CSS has been cracked, which isn't necessary for simple playback.

Which is less trouble, downloading a new version of AnyDVD (or finding a PSL2 file for DVD Decrypter which is equally effective) or capturing the entire movie during playback?

Something very similar to what you are proposing has been done since the inception of video capture cards and capture software and standalone DVD players. Folks have been capturing the realtime movie-only and burning them to DVDs.

While this is fine for some people, others (including me) are seeking to truly backup our DVD collections - meaning duplicating the entire DVD...
