About the configuration of the x264 vfw encoder

How can change the AVC profiles in the vfw configuration?It seems that I can only change the AVC profiles in the MeGUI?

the VFW gui is pretty much discontinued, it's as it was a couple of months ago ...

the only active part of x264 is the CLI, and MeGUI is constantly updated to follow the CLI =)

just forget vfw, and if you can't do without it ... die with it ! :p

Much to my pleasure, Sharktooth recently added an "Insane Mode" to the subpel refinement in his vfw build (Revision 398E).

So use that if you have a bit of time on your hands and you want to milk the codec for what it's worth ;)

It is very funny, since I don't know how to use the CLI. I want to compress An AVI file( no_compressed) with X264 and than change to another AVI file and I use the VirtualDub with the VFW. :( May be you can give me some point about how to use the CLI:D
As the CLI needs to input an avisynth file,but I don't know how to change an AVI file to avisynth file.

Well, you can drag & drop your AVI into MeGUI and it will guide you through the AviSynth creation.. you don't need any AviSynth knowledge for that.

The bigger question is.. why do you need AVI output after encoding? It's likely (I'm not a 100% sure since I've never done it), that you cannot even edit your AVI like you can with other AVIs because of technical reasons (I-frames versus IDR-frames).. so why keep it an AVI if you can't properly edit it?

Oh, I get it! Why I choose the AVI as the container is that I just encoded the video with VFW in the WirtualDub as it is very easy to output AVi file. If I know how to use the CLI I think I will choose the MP4 or the MKV as the container:D

You can... The non IDR i-frames are simply not marked as key-frames, they behaves like predicted-frames (like in the cli mode), no problem with that.

Why do you want to convince everyone to use Megui and MKV/MP4 so strongly? As much as you hate it, avi/vfw still works perfectly, and they have by far the widest support out there. They might be not compliant with your imaginery standard (it's not like MKV will ever be a standard), but other than that, they are still perfectly usable. There is no need for this anti vfw/avi crusade...

Yes. But I don't use anymore filters in VirtualDub, so can I use the CLI with VirtualDub?

Well, i agree, the constant nagging can be annoying (maybe this issue should be added to the faq in the sticky thread [EDIT: oh i see you just created a sticky for it :D]), and i can accept that the developers are not interested in the improvement of the vfw interface. But as editability is very important to me for certain reasons, i'm forced to use avi (editing mkv/mp4 videos is a mayor pain in the ass.), and in my experience the limitations of vfw/avi have no effect on the usability or quality, so the constant bashing is very annoying to me (not particularly from you but from Bond and Sharktooth) so i had to vent off a bit. :p My point is: if some people want to use vfw/avi, just let them, don't try to convert everyone, sometimes even with over-exaggerations and false claims.

Certainly, but as long as there is no alternative, i can live with these issues. And on very important materials disabling the b-frames is always an option if these are unacceptable (yes, the quality will be decreased a bit by this, but still better than what the other codecs can offer).
